Hi, below I have included links to a coin that is apart of a collection of my deceased Grandfather. It was given to him by a Librarian that saved it from a fire.

If you have any information regarding this coin such as the history, value, rarity or even title it will be highly appreciated.

It appears to be a medallion or celebration coin for the Battle of Buena Vista in 1848.

The coins I have found are not quite exactly like this one though.

Also, as you likely know, he was also the 12th President of the United States.

If you've never seen it before either that makes me even more tickled pink. I spent the last hour trying different search queries on Google to find an image of the exact piece and have turned up no luck. On past occasions when I've handled the coin and tried to read the back of the piece, if I didn't know any better it looks like it is in another language using english characters. One word looks like 'alma' and of course the obvious 'Buena Vista'.

I did a bit of searching myself before replying and did not see the exact coin.

As you will see, there is a commemorative coin for the victory which has some similarities but is not the coin you have.

The direction of the profile on the obverse seems to separate it from the major of coins I have saw. If you do find out more about it please let me know. It has my peeked my curiosity.
