The date is Taisho Year 6, or 1917. The denomination is 20 yen. It should weigh 16.67 grams and contain .4823 ounces of gold. It is the commonest year of the type. However, if my now-far-outdated Krause is to be believed, it should still hold a premium of $1000 or so over the BV price.

JNDA has it valued at more than 2500USD. Very nice coin - doesn't' pop up very often even though the mintage is more than 6 million.

"valued at" means nothing. I reckon should around 10% above SPOT if it within raw condition.

JNDA stands for Japan Numismatics Dealer Association. http://www.jnda.or.jp/I can assure you Nic that you cannot obtain any Meiji era Japanese coins at 10%+ spot. Even a dealer would not go that low unless it's heavily damaged - a lot of Meiji era gold coins were melted down and in XF+ condition, they do carry significant premium. Give ebay a search and feel free to report back what you see. I'm happy to buy them at 10% spot and make profit.

mkman123, I got it from my dad as a gift 35 years ago, after I received my master degree. I love it so much almost start a collection, even though I only have few Japanese coins. At this time, I need some capital to finance my projects to build affordable houses throughout the world. Since I am not eligible to sell in this forum and due to exposure to larger market, I decided to sell some of my coins collection through Stack's Bower. I will post the auction date in this forum.
