Hi - new memeber here and a collector of Australian decimals and errors. The RAM site says they minted 55.1 million of the 1983 Twenty Cents and 27.8 million of 1984. I have never seen any in general circulation. Does anyone know where they went? I have only ever seen these two coins in mint sets.

Nearly all were believed to have been melted down as they were not required. Very few survived.

with nancyc, This is the general consensus of what happened to these mintage's.
The good news however is that the mint sets for 83 and 84 are still relatively inexpensive and the chances of getting the coins are still pretty good

Welcome to CCF, karloning. I've taken the liberty of moving your post to a place where it will receive a more focused audience, and urge you in the future to consider the location of your threads more carefully.

Of course, if it's your intent to be with us in Philadelphia five weeks' hence, I will reconsider this move.

Welcome to CCF, karloning.

Yep, the general consensus is that the vast majority of the 1983/84 20 cent coins were melted down. Certainly, I've never found any in general circ.

As nancyc has mentioned, the mint sets are easy to obtain. Just be aware there's two types of protective covering for 1984; one is a yellow plastic - this is the cheaper set - the one with clear plastic costs more. So if you're looking for a set to split up, the yellow versions will be cheaper

I have found 3 each of these in all of my time searching through 20c coins (around $20K worth). From memory they seem to be in similar condition to others from the period, however they could just as easily be from broken down mint sets!

I found a 1984 a while ago, I've probably done only 1k of 20c pieces. Mine was fairly shiney and looked new with a few bits of gunk on the queen's head (though I had assumed it escaped a mint set)

Hi Karloning! I'm new here too, and have only been collecting decimal coins for a few months. Glad you asked that question I don't seem to have made a note to look for these, but guess what? I've just realized I have two 83's in my collection. Considering I only 'noodle' the change from shopping each week I'm chuffed
