I was coasting for a while with my collecting, adding new date coins in as they came out and picking up one or two nicer pieces but I had stopped reading and researching thoroughly. (Mainly due to the closure of my local coin shop about 15 years back)
Anyway, I thought I would find out a little more on the internet and see whether a couple of dates of modern coins I have missing were actually produced (Like the 1993 5p piece I never found) and the 1986 20p.
Well I found that the 1992 has 5 varieties...so I just searched £30 in 10p's (approx half of which were 1992's cos they released that year) and I found only 1 kind there. I understand the main distinction is whether the writing lines up with the beading and whether the lion's main has 4 or 5 tufts under chest. Anyway, no luck there.
Then I saw that the 1997 £2 could have either the younger or the older bust on it. The one I put away at the time is the younger bust (the rarer one I believe) and I see I need to find an older portrait one in good condition.
Looking on these forums and seeing the amount of error coins existing in US money I wonder if there are any common errors in UK coinage (I know about the 1992 20P's with no date but I am more likely to win the lottery than find one in my change)
Needless to say I will be scrutinizing my small change again in the coming months.

There is only one type of 1997 £2 - the type with the necklace. 13.7 million minted.

Yeah, I realised I meant 2008 but couldnt find an edit button :S I heard that those 2008 coins were all bought up by a couple of companies and I see that people are selling them on ebay for rediculous money. As for the £2 I heard they had problems with vending machines or something and that they were available both with and without the necklaces (both released in large numbers but with the necklace being the rarer) That information was gleamed from another website... you know it to be inacurate?

Re the 1997 £2 coin:
The 2012 Spink catalogue only lists the "necklace" |(Maklouf) portrait for 1997. The "older" (Rank-Broadley)portrait is listed from 1998 onwards. It lists rarities such as the 1933 and 1954 pennies and the 1952 half-crown, so if a 1997 Rank-Broadley £2 was generally known to collectors, it would be reasonable to assume it would be in the catalogue. I have never seen such a coin listed anywhere. What is your source?

Yes I would be inclined to believe the catalogue over a website... it seems many websites have a few mistakes in them.
Well I guess thats good news... its one less I am missing.

What actually happened is everyone daft enought to write to them was placed on their mailing list, to be sent their promotional items "on approval" http://www.24carat.co.uk/frame.php?...rrumour.html

Yes there were problems with vending machines and acceptance of them - due to this the whole issue (1997 and 1998 dated coins) were withheld from release until June 1998. More here - http://www.24carat.co.uk/twopoundsrumour.htmlThis is the first time I heard of two types of 1997 coin though.

Well, that explains the information I read is this myth that there are £2 coins of each portrait in that year. Clearly the website I read that on believed the myth to be true but I am satisfied by that article that it was just a rumour with no truth behind it.
