Does this 88 D looks like it was hit with some electrical current and the metal started to flow? I can't think of another cause.

It looks to me like electrical current contacted at 10 and 3 o'clock, melted the contact locations, heating the metal in the coin.......

Shocking! Perhaps someone with too much time (and a nickel) on their hands and a MIG (metal inert gas) Welder?

I was thinking melting also. The contact marks on the rim look very similar to metal melt. The obv and rev, more so the obv, really looks super smooth and glossy. But I don't know what reaction would occur, and how something like that would affect the metal in a 88 nickel.

Is that how the metal reacts with something like that?
