I guess I will need to make a friend soon because I have been looking a lot on ebay recently for US notes and I realise that if I buy all the ones I need as singles and have them individually shipped I will be paying way over the top to complete my US note collection. US notes aren't my specialization really but I travelled the States for about 9 months in 2004, I noted that there were 3 different kinds of notes regularly seen (small headed, large headed and some newer more colourful notes) I tried to collect one of each type for each denomination...obviously one or two were not possible (the $100 the new ones looked like the old ones, the $1's were all small headed) I kept a pile of $2 notes (about 10 in total) and was unaware of star notes and serial numbers (of no real interest to me) Anyway now I am going to dedicate 1 album just to American notes and I imagine will be fairly satisfied if I can reach about 50-60 notes. It wont be a particularly valuable collection probably 90% of the value will be in a very small number of notes. (Woodchopper, Bison, Educational and a couple of earlier varieties) I am not interested in having graded notes (I want them all without tears, holes and generally good but I realise for really pristine condition older notes will be outside of my budget) I think its fun to bid on one piece at a time and regularly have new additions but when the postage is similar to the auction price I see that it is not money well spent to build this collection in that way. The bigger pieces I can afford 1 or 2 times a year to spend $500 on a piece and more regularly the odd piece for under $100...I am sure many of notes I require won't even cost that much. I am not expecting to visit the States again any time soon or I would save up my money and visit a store over there so any advice on how I should go about this would be appreciated.

Well, there really is no rules on how and what to collect. I would say buy what you can find and afford. You may also want to save up for the expensive notes first. Since they are popular the price may increase and you may find them constantly out of your reach. So save up and get the expensive notes like the Bison one. And there will always be notes that are way out of your range, unless you're a billionaire.

I can confirm that I m not a billionaire... That is one reason that I am searching for value... and I realise that value isn't buying a note on ebay for $30 and paying $37.50 for it to be delivered. I will keep my eyes on those big notes and search for ones that meet my critia on being decent condition (not 3rd party graded, damage free and for a competative price) but really my question lies with the smaller cheaper notes... these will bulk out my collection eg. notes with different colour seals etc Where should I buy those to order and multiples at the same time to save on postage?

Buy them at Auction, coinex or Birmingham coin show! No Shipping and you get to see before you buy!

If you're looking at notes from some of the better dealers, a lot of them will work with you by combining shipping or if you give them a list of your wants, they'll give you a much better price than their "Buy it Now" prices. I've never had a problem with any of them and gotten some excellent notes at very good prices.

Birmingham is a bit of a trek but I think I will definately check it out next time there is a fair in London.
I am sure it will save me a lot of money to buy from a dealer. I would assume that there is a wide selection of American notes available at those shows.
I was thinking maybe if I make a few friends on here it will be possible in future times to do some decent size trades. (to fill in gaps in circulating coinage and many of these notes I am sure US collectors will have doubles of)

Another way, is to get enough posts and wait the given amount of time, and post your want list. Which is July 11th, for you. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...sp#rulesid12I bet there are quite a few people that can fill them, for the more common/recent notes, if you don't have those already. The $10 and $20 notes have changed, since 2004. And I think the $50 note has changed, since 2004 too?

I hear you,
<----Posting and waiting!
I think I have most of the recent ones (got them from a foriegn exchange before I took a trip to vegas in 2009...lucky I kept them before I went because I came back with 50 cents in my pocket, thats what happens when you flop 7 sets and win with none of them)
I am thinking a Bison note is just out of my price range... a woodchopper is my next priority and then a couple of the early "United States of America" notes.
I got a silver cert $1 in the post today and have a $10 North Africa on its way... but still lots of gaps to fill with notes that seem plentiful and affordable as long as they are middle of the range condition. Its those that I guess I will have to trade for unless I want to pay a premium + postage.

Cool. And the $5 note has changed in 2008 too. Just making sure you have all of the current designs.

Thanks for the info... I just went on ebay again :S managed to get a red seal £5, and yellow seal $1 and $10... next I want a set of Hawaii notes with brown seals. I am still looking for a good value clean woodchopper, I have seen a couple so far but they wont ship to UK but now I will wait and see if what arrive in the post is up to scratch and save my money for a bit. I ordered more pages too as I I have more notes than storage at present.
