I found a penny in one of the rolls I had that zinc or aluminum that was stripping off and I was trying to figure out if it is one of the ones that were made of aluminum when the mint was experimenting on different metals to use for the penny to save on cost. Please keep in mind that I only know this from books and honsetly don't know if it is in fact true. I took a couple pictures of it and one of the picture has the penny in question side by side with another penny from 1985 that is not showing through. I don't know if it is the same metal underneath but I wanted to atleast have something to compare it to. I also found another penny from 1991 that had the full date but the "1" at the end of 1991 was very dim and hard to see and almost looks like it is not there. The words "In God we trust" is also dim and is partially missing. The collar on the penny is a little high but the penny seem to be ok other than being off center. img] http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...nniesobv.jpgPlease let me know any information you may have on either pennies. Thanks.

Quote: I was trying to figure out if it is one of the ones that were made of aluminum when the mint was experimenting on different metals to use for the penny to save on cost. The experimental aluminum cents you are referring to were minted in 1974. This coin is simply suffering from a case of zinc rot (corrosion). This is very common with post-1982 Lincoln cents, which have a zinc core that is copper plated. The words "In God we trust" is also dim and is partially missing. This is most likely due to Grease Filled Dies. Again this is very common. From what I can see in the photo, I would say there is no added value.

Yes, one of my first modern pennies I posted here was a zinc pimple.
Though not worth more than a cent, I have it in a folder in my personal collection.

Lots of coins pop up in chahge like that. I suspect many are from kids in Chem labs in school.
