I just bought a few of these brown box Ike's at a garage sale for just a few dollars over face. My question is:

Were brown box Ike's minted in 1976 and packaged in the brown boxes or just in the 3 coin sets?

I can easily tell if it is silver by looking at the rim but I don't want to crack the case open. Thanks!

Hi,

The only "BROWN BOX" Ike Silver Proofs were issued for these 4 years only : 1971S,1972S,1973S and 1974S.

Bi-Cenn Silver Proof Ikes were issued as part of 3 piece sets "RED PACK". (1975/1976).

The "Blue" and "Brown" Ike's were minted in 1971, 1972, 1973 & 1974. The "Blue" Ikes are the Business Strike and the "Brown" Ikes are the Proof strikes. Both bear the S mint mark.

The 1976 Bicentennial Issues also came in commemorative 3 coin packaging. The Business strikes came in a red envelope and the Proof strikes were distributed in a little nicer looking blue "folder".

Not exactly sure what you have.
