You can find unopened proof sets on ebay. Some of the sellers tell you that you never know what could be inside.

These sets do sell at a premium (sometimes much more so) to the opened envelope sets. I would expect sets unopened or not to be pretty much the same.

Does anyone here buy unopened proof sets and if so what are you looking for ?

I may be mistaken but if I recall correctly, these sets were never originally sold sealed. Over the years they may have become sealed in storage but I don't think they came from the mint that way.

The only way you can be sure the sets were never searched is to purchase them in the ORIGINAL UNOPENED package delivered from the mint... The package will have all the necessary information, such as the Order Number, Name & Address the package was sent to, the date and quanity of sets in the package, etc... If the packaging (paper tape) doesn't look right, chances are the package was open...
I was also thinking that a dealer could purchase a large lot of Mint & Proof Sets on the secondary market and may be telling the truth that he didn't inspect them and are unsearched by him, but without the original shipment boxes I would assume that whoever the dealer purchased them from did search them...

I suppose people will always be looking for errors and varieties within unopened mint proof set, but, and this is especially true with older proof sets, people look for cameos. The coins with cameos bring a large premium compared to the other coins. Cameos represent the very early strikes of a new die, or newly polished die and are pretty rare.

I buy the older proof sets in the black and red capital plastics. I think the Franklin in the 1961 is a gorgeous cameo.
