I happened to go into my local dealer today. I asked if he had any ASEs, maybe bout 3 or 4 he says sure. I say cool how much? He tells me $31.50 which is about $3.00 over spot. I like the price so I let him know I'm gonna run to the bank and be right back. When I get back the shop is much busier. I see this really young kid looking at the miscellaneous silver bin. It is a little fuller than usual I walk over and look after the kid is finished and there are a few 10.XXX bars from New Hope and these giant coins as well as the usual stuff, various one ounce rounds and bars. So the coins resemble ASE with no dollar amount printed on them. They have a reeded edge except a one inch patch on the top and bottom. The bottom has a 5 digit serial number and the top has two faint lines of text the top line I cant quite make out the bottom line says .999 fine silver. So I buy the coin for $1.50over spot.Is this a good deal? I am pretty sure that it is not struck nor a product of the US mint but I bought it for bullion so it doesn't matter. I also noticed that there was a German Silver bar that looked exactly like a nicer art bar. I held it up and gave him a questioning look he said the bars are $30. I said its not silver he looked at me like I was crazy. I said its German silver and he said well that doesn't belong in there. Then he said something like darn it that looked.... I did not know. I will be posting this subject as a separate topic too. So anyway here's the pics. Also does uploading the pics without exiting spell checker delete evryones entire text or just mine? Wow! A 1-lb. ASE! That is one big coin. Is that 1-lb Troy or Avdp. weight?

A Troy LB. 12 ozs I found the size to be disturbing to me so I sold it to melt. Please don't ask me why I find them disturbing I just do. But then again 12 oz of silver is 12 ozs of silver no matter how you slice it.

Steele,
This sounds crazy...but I haven't been to a coin shop in the US or a coin show in about 15 years.
I don't even know what a junk silver bin looks like!
Still, nice pickup...I'd buy it!

I'm just grateful it wasn't actually a coin but a medal and really just bullion at that.

I have the 4 oz. version stored somewhere. It's OK; a bit big. It's quite thin, though, compared to what one typically sees in the dimensions of larger coins or bars. The 12 oz. one must have the same radius as a dinner plate.

The twelve oz is about 3.5inches in diameter but super thick. It fit in my pocket. I was on my to work when I got it so I just kept it in my hip pocket all day. It was a bear trying to fit it in a vending machine though.

I hope you were joking. That thing with absolutely no offense meant to the original poster is my book the definition of junk silver all be it, it is .999 not 90%.
I think probably because the SAE is my favorite coin that's why this abomination bothers me so much.

These things do not bother me nearly as much as do the BIG ATB series of quarters that you see from time to time. They are 5-oz. and it says "quarter dollar" on one side. Sheesh, already!

TBK, I know what you meant and no offense taken. One of the things that made me like it was the overall garishness of it. I bought just for fun and really on a whim. I had not planned to buy any silver other than a few regular ASE. But I had the money in my pocket and figured silver is silver. I have always wanted to try pouring my own bars and I figure if I get tired of it I can always sell it or cut it up and use parts of it to practice melting. It really doesn't fit well in the stack.
