I just finished reading an article about the 10 1933 Eagles that are currently "seized" by the Gov't. My first thought was why in the heck would you invite the Chief Counsel to the Mint to come and get the coins to have them authenticated, why not just give them a single one and say that was all you had.

Another interesting thing in the article was that at one point you could go to the customer window at the Mint and "exchange" gold for new gold coins. This happened for three weeks following their first minting according to this article in COINage magazine.

What is everyones thought on wether the family shouls get these back, be destroyed, or held by the Gov't forever. My personal thought is, the family should be able to keep them, but not be allowed to profit from their sale, unless is was like the one that has been sold where profits were divided between them and the Gov't.

there have been so many threads about this particular topic that I will not even comment again my thoughts on it. I think this is the most debatable question and tears collectors in half between what they would like to see happen and what they know is the "legal" thing with the situation

I really don't have an opinion on the matter. I am interested to see how it all plays out in court.
Rest in Peace

This is America. They should go back to the family.

However, I must say it's hard to understand why the former owners did what they did. Surely they knew they would lose the coins. Not too smart.

Well, since Treasury effectively "monetized" that first '33 (the King Farouk one that sold recently), and the 1913 nickels are seemingly "legit", I think the 10 new '33s should be legal, too.

In reading the timeline for the events of 1933 concerning gold, the double eagles were minted BEFORE good ol' FDR mandated the illegality of owning them. This alone should, IMHO, make them completely legal to own.
