MathieuMa That is a very nice coin - thanks for pointing it out. I rarely bid on a coin before the last few seconds. I just set a price limit and put a snipe bid on coins.
This is a good one in my opinion to bid on. So I do have a snipe bid on it.
Do you think it is a counterfeit and if so do you suspect Circulating Contemporary or Modern?

I actually think the coin is an original. It is Hubbard die M05 but when I enlarge the photo, it is too grainy to realy see the surfaces so there is no positive determination for me. However I am not as bold as you two are, I would never bid on a coin from out of country being sold by someone with minimal feedback and 90% of her sales to just 2 different people. The sad part is it is a coin I would like to have if original. Swamperbob, if you end up with the coin and determine it is original and want to sell it let me know. (You are the only one I know who is happier when the coin turns out to be fake)

This style is also one I'm looking for, but prices of those tend to go high ... not the kind of stuff I like to play with with that kind of seller, as you mentionned jfransch ... Regarding fake or not, I'm unsure. It's not a modern copy - actually what I found strange is the line around the cap & ray. Nevertheless, false or true, it's a very interesting coin :) I won't bid, as you two are on it. Watch out this other one he has on sale (fake this time) : http://www.ebay.com/itm/SCARCE-1852...em35be0debd5

Somehow I don't like it, but I have just the ebay picture to go on. If it is fake, it would be the best made fake I have seen in a long time. Also, it would be modern, as it would mean a very exact and detailed die copy - the contemporary counterfeiters didn't put that much emphasis on precision, as I understand...

MM, what makes you say the 1852 is fake? Just curious.

I am fairly sure both are real based only on the pictures. I often take a flyer (gamble) on new guys. You never know.
The inner circle on th 1823 Mo should be there. It is the only mexican Hookneck with the circle.
If they are fakes that would be better because they look very good, but if real I will likely sell them again.

jfransch : just my ignorance - I didn't liked the inner circle on the first one, and the eagle design on the second one. But it was still a nice idea to spot those apparently :D

MM I was trying to learn for myself, I wanted to know what I was missing on the second coin, certainly not questioning your opinion. I have been collecting 8s for 30+ years and still feel like a first grader in Swamperbobs Counterfeit Detection Class. Every new coin show I attend is a great learning experience for me and I am starting to recognize more and more of the coins displayed as "suspect". I can't wait for Bob's book on counterfeits to be published so I can read it cover to cover about 4 times. Do you have a copy of "Resplandores" by Mike Dunigan?

No I don't, I don't collect this serie actually :) I'm on the following : * Spain, from 1000 AD till Ferdinand VII end of reign I'm thinking of stopping medieval, but there are some coins I like there so ... I'm unsure My favourite period / types are : Felipe II (I'm getting one of each denomination for each mint for now), Transitional cobs of Potosi, Santa Maria type, and Ferdinand VII * South american duros : small side collection, I'm getting the first duro style for each country after they got freed from Spain
I just got hooked to resplandores because of you all, so I like watching all the existing variants and listening to their stories :D (nope, I don't have this book)
Regarding the design of that second coin, here is what I found strange : * Overall feather details * Overall eagle's eye and beak design * Circle on the bird's left wing * Eagle's right leg design * Writing position and details on this side (the eagle is sharp, the writing don't look that way)

MathieuMa The reason you NEED TO GET "Resplandores" is that if you had a copy you would know that almost everything you see as "strange" is expected on that date.
The eagle is truly an odd looking bird which is precisely why I want it. I do maintain a collection of original Eagle varieties and that one is not yet in my eagle coop.

Well, as I don't collect those yet ... I don't need the book yet ;) I've been bidding too much lately (the last one was 2 coins from the Huntington collection) - I prefer not to add anything above that :p
So you are bidding on both ? :)

The 1852 for sure, but I am waiting to hear on the 1823 if a friend wants to try his luck with it.

I'll pass my turn, I've depleted my budget since a while already :) Someone else here willing to give it a try ? The coin has been detected by those with proper knowledge, so I suppose it won't go for a cheap price anyway.
