Hello, I am new to this board and would like some help identifying this coin. I have the Charlton Token Guide, but it does not list this variety. The coin is the same size as the copper one, but appears to be made of silver. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Edited by mindfreak 07/07/2012 7:56 pm

Dos it have an engrailed edge? It does not appear to be silver, from the colour of the residue around the edges. It also appears to be weakly struck, and to be missing the proper beaded denticles around the rims on both sides.

You should weight it. John1

Might also check to see if its magnetic which will help identify the metal.

I met SPP Ottawa at the show last week, and I am patiently waiting to see what he says about it.

Coin weighs 16.59 grams, non-magnetic. I will test it with the XRF sometime next week.

In my 1962 standard catalouge of Canadian coins tokens & paper money(tenth edition-1961) it shows this coin. It's on page 36 & #128 in the book with the BRETON number being #868. Dosent really say anything about the coin, but it does show it. Another book(Canadian coins tokens & paper money-1st edition-1981) shows there were 217,776 minted & it has the same BRETON # of #868. Can you see the initials "LCW" below the bust? Seems it was Leonard Charles Wyon who was the designer & chief engraver of The Royal Mint, London. It seems the real special coin in that era to find would be the 1832 1/2 penny that has an error which shows the date of 1382(BENTON #872 & #872a). Hope this helps. :)

I think this thing is legit, as an off-metal strike - it contains about 1/3 silver by content (which makes no sense, being a penny)...
Stay tuned...

I've started getting into bank tokens, that's a VERY nice error.
as for the "1382", I was under the impression those were contemporary counterfeits and ot really varieties?
