Once again, I'd like to thank all the collectors who've responded to my posts. I found this dime in a small grouping of worn out Roosevelt dimes. She really stood out of the group. The 1926 D Mercury has a beautiful luster. The vertical bands on the reverse are nice but the horizontal bands show some wear. The E from ONE on the reverse looks like a grease clogged die. Is she worth sending to PCGS ? What are your opinions on the grade? I have no money in the coin so my only expense would be the grading. Lots of clean pictures for your consideration. Thank you all in advance.

I'm thinking AU53ish, possible light clean.

I tend to agree with vermontensium opinion ... perhaps a technical grade of AU53 with a likely early light cleaning and/or dip.

A few caveat however ... my eye is drawn to the unfortunate bag hit on Ms. Liberty jaw (obverse portrait) ... and the general strike is average as expected for this coin date/mint.

The surfaces are troubling to me ... without the coin in hand hard to judge original condition ... but I still lean to an old cleaning.

IMHO .... No.

If the coin actually grades PCGS AU53 this is a $40-$50 coin in today's market ... and although a nice coin not worth the price of slabbing.

Great responses. Thanks. I had a bad feeling that it was cleaned. I've purchased some coins from this person before and some of those were cleaned too. I get the coins cheap enough so I'm OK. You still hate to find out they're cleaned.

Uhhhhmmm ... since you are the one seeing the coins in hand prior to purchase ... perhaps you should just stop purchasing the cleaned examples from this dealer?

The CCF is great for education and opinions ... but the best defense for all collectors is your own knowledge.

Let me clarify. I'm by no means a coin expert. I don't buy from dealers, I buy from the public (also, in most cases no expert). When you are offered 12 Morgans for 150 dollars are you going to complain about two being cleaned? I'm not good at identifying old clean jobs but newer high polish jobs are easy to spot. I'd still pay under melt if it's being offered to me as would all else.

If I was offered that the first thing I would take out of my wallet would be a magnet

I feel that this coin may have been originally struck FSB, but they have fused slightly with a tiny amount of wear.

Therefore AU55. There a few tiny nicks that would be consistent with this grade.

Mac and the Capt, are probably going to disagree with me on this, but I think those diagonal lines are too strong for an AU. If the horizontal bands had worn and blended as much as they have, I would think you would have more wear on the diagonals. I think it is a bit above average on the strike, at least on the Reverse.

As for being cleaned, I'm not seeing what everyone else is seeing. I would hold off on calling it cleaned until I could see it in hand. Camera's can do some funny things to coins.

I think it is a great value for what you paid for it.

I also did a quick check on the bay's completed listings and they are bringing about $50 to $60 it is true, but those coins don't look as nice as yours. And if it were MS then it jumps to $100 minimum.

JMkendall: . Cleaned? I would like to see it in the hand as well. Perhaps some of the others in this thread can point out what I cannot see.

First let me say I am not a dime collector. But here is what I think IMHO: because of the dark area on the T,the scratches in front of the face, what looks like a carbon spot right of the B,the nick on the jaw and the damage on the word ONE,if this was my coin it would be going on e-Bay to be sold and if I needed it for my collection I would be looking for one in better condition.

The dime for this year are well struck, so it is common for the obverse, however; the reverse suffer the same peripheral weakness for either the word STATE or ONE. This year also have a high 3rd party graded rate with full band.

I have to agree that lighting plays trick on coins, and I recently return a coin I purchased on the bay for the first time, the coin look good in hand almost, but something doesn't look right on the obverse and under blue lighting when I review it, there was diagonal polishing done professionally.

Anyway, coming back from what my opinion to the 26-D dime here, is that I can assure that the camera pick up more details than if I hold it in hand reviewing it, and also some camera over sharpen the details making it looks like excessive or possible cleaning. I would think general minor circulation with rubbing over time cause the wear.

mds308 got a bargain for the price he paid for the lot that came with this, I would not bother submitting to any TPG, and call it AU-53 also, if it weren't for the few noticeable scratches on the obverse. I would think it will go AU-58.

Unless it is the result of the lighting, I would go with AU-55ish details, light cleaning.
