I have a box of world coins from my grndfather and I don't know where to begin. I was told to get a magnet and remove all the steel ones then then sort the silver and the gold ones.I guess certain years were gold and silver.

en.numista.com is your friend

whatever you do, DO NOT SELL ANYTHING until you are 100% sure what you have.

generally speaking silver stopped in n.america in late 1960s, world stuff around the 1940s

post CLEAR pictures (or scans) here, you will get a ton of help. even just a quick shot of 10 coins at a time, if there is anything of interest the people here will point out which ones to take close ups of.

cant stress this enough, CLEAR pictures, need to be able to see details and read dates.

Yeah, I wouldn't just toss a magnet in the box and hope for the best. You could damage some coins that are not gold or silver. Some of them are more expensive than a gold or silver coin. Also, just because it is not attracted to a magnet doesn't mean that it is gold or silver. This was really bad advice that has the potential to damage the coins.

Everyone here is thinking that they want what you have. The chance of finding a treasure from the past.

Be careful how you handle the coins and use the expertise available on this site. Don't rush!

We brought it to a dealer in boston with other stuff and he offered 40 dollars for the box. there's over a thousand coins in that box. He pulled a coin aside from the 1700's and told my brother it was his. My brother did get it back.

RUN, and dont look back.

you can get 100 coins on a scanner bed at a time,

post the scans (use a third party file host, the file limits here would make for poor pics)

wait for help
