Could keeping a coin in a 2x2 cardboard flip for years cause permanent damage on a coin? I've been collecting classic US coins for about 2 years now and have kept most of my coins in the same 2x2 flips that I got them in. Is there a certain amount of time in which I should change the 2x2? And what king of damage, if any, would the flips cause?

I have some cardboard 2x2s that I sealed up as a kid 30 years ago, no change in the appearance of the coins. The biggest factor is preserving them is the environment the coins are being stored in, low temp and low humidity is best. If you have ever seen a 2x2 with rusty staples, the coin has most definitely been improperly stored.

The mylar flips are supposed to be safe. Make sure the staples are flat as they can damage coins in adjacent flips.

I do not know about carboard flaps, I air-tight seal all of my coins. I must say though, your screen name rocks bro. HAHAHA

Being technical, the cardboard 2x2s are not flips. They are just 2x2s. Flips are all plastic double pockets. If you had older flips, like from the 70's, then you could have issues due to PVC being in the plastic. Something from a couple years ago should be ok.

Personally I put my coins in my own 2x2s most of the time. If for no other reason than I dont need someone elses notations and catalog numbers on my coins.

Though I did save the 2x2 with Same as 5 pizzas on it. LOL I love that guy.

@smokeriderdon

Know what you mean. Occasionally he has some higher value stuff and I want to ask him why he doesn't stamp them, "just 70 pizzas".

No, the flips would not affect the condition of the coin. What would change the condition however would be the location you live/store your coins. If you live in a humid area your coins might begin to deteriorate so put silicone patches (the things inside shoe boxes that feel like salt) to absorb any moisture.

Basically no the flips will not change the condition its just the environment.

@OldSkoolMadSkilz

Then at that amount, you start to lose the value drive on the deal. Hmmm, 70 pizza's at $5.00 each (Little Caesars deal)...break open the 401k!
