I just started a new job, and I noticed that one of my coworkers was always looking through the change till for odd quarters. I mentioned that I collected coins, and our supervisor said that the guy I had seen did as well. I asked him about it, and he mentioned with pride how he had a 1970 quarter :) He also beamed when he found a 1953 penny that night.
So, I decided that I wanted to blow his mind, and get him something that would be the oldest coin he had by far. My coin dealer is super nice, often selling me junk grade (his junk grade box often has VF or better pieces) coins at near or less than melt.
I picked out an 1894 NFLD 20 Cent piece in decent shape, 2 by 2'd it, and stuck it in the car for a suprise next time I saw him.
Sure enough, half way through the day, I mentioned how I had gotten him a little something since he was a fellow collector. You. Should. Have. Seen. His face.
TOTALLY worth double the $4 I paid for the coin. Plus, the "friend price" total on what I had bought (1812 Silver Proof DOllar, 63 Franklin, 1885 NFLD half, plus some holders) was $70, and he charged me $65. SO for $-1, it was definitely worth it!
I think it's the only piece of silver he owns, and I can imagine it being a prize piece.
I have to say, it was a lark. Imagine giving random people on the street a NFLD Nickel or something (I live in NFLD), what a riot! Or, tip a waitress with one!

When visiting family on the rock, I got a Newfie 20 cent piece in change from the local store AND was given full change... They counted it as a 20 cent piece! Best Change Ever! Also, what part of Newfoundland are you from (my Dad's family comes from a small town near Corner Brook)?

Great story! Quote: tip a waitress with one!
I like to leave a couple Buffalo nickels with tips. People react like they hit the Lottery!...fun to see.

Anjohl, I occasionally do the same thing with new collectors or potential collectors. If I see someone who even has a remote snow balls chance in Hell, for Numismatics, I'll treat them to one of my traders! Glenn

Anjohl, I will be in Deer Lake & St. John's in August, what coin shop do you go to? I'm looking for somewhere I can pick up some inexpensive low grade Newfoundland coins. Thanks!

Hilarious (and awesome) ... => I also have occasionally tossed-in a couple of crinkly ol' $1 Canadian bills into our Friday afternoon poker-pot .... man, the intensity increases dramatically (I'm the only guy that knows that the bills aren't worth too much more than face value ... but eh? ... who am I to spoil the fun, right!!?) => nice story, Anjohl

This story renews my faith that coin collecting will survive. Nicely done, Anjohl, and a kind gesture.

At my work place I was giving a silver coin from the year of their birth and wow people apreciate it. I had problem for a co-worker, she was born in 1970 and the mint didn't released silver coin that year. So I gave her a 1958 dollar, commemorating BC century, and again I had a hit. Sometime I disguised as a clown in some events and clumsily do some magic tricks pulling out a large penny from a child ear and giving them. Oh what a generous man I was. It is fun to see all that amusement I bring with odd coins that most of the people never saw.

yup => 1968, 1969 and 1970 ... if those are your B-Day years, then there is no silver dollar for ya ... that's a shame, eh? => oh, and also if your B-day is prior to 1935 as well ... that's for any of you good ol' dawgs (78 years or older)!! cheers!!
