I have this coin in my collection of random foreign coins that I have accumulated over the years from both myself and family members traveling. I'm not sure where it came from or even when. I was hoping someone here might be able to tell me a little bit about it. Sorry ahead of the time that the photos aren't that great. I've just started taking photos of my collection and am working with minimal experience and equipment.

Some details about this coin:
It appears to be 1mm thick with a diameter between 21.5mm and 22mm
Unfortunately I do not have a scale to accurately weigh it but it feels like somewhere in between a US nickel and dime.

Help-Identify-This-Coin,-Possibly-Asian? Help-Identify-This-Coin,-Possibly-Asian?

Thanks for the help!

Which part is the date? I can try to get a better picture of it lol. If it is on the reverse above the little swirly thing then I think it is 2002 because the symbols match.

So who is the portrait on the obverse of?

Did some research and apparently it's this guy, Bhumibol Adulyadej

I must need a new ruler because I was off by over a millimeter, weird.

Thanks for the fast response and for finally shedding some light on this coin for my family and me!

LOL...no I mean I literally do not know how to read the date. The Ruler is Bumipol Adulyadej (Rama IX).

The portrait is of Thailand's king, Rama IX Bhumiphol. He appears on virtually all Thai coins struck since his coronation in 1946.

The date is indeed on the reverse, the four symbols above the large swirl (which is the Thai numeral "1"). However, the date is written in the Thai Buddhist calendar. I believe the date on your coin is 2552, which converts to AD 2008.

Haha, well apparently the older coins listed the date only in Thai numerals and newer coins have Thai and Arabic numerals. Not sure exactly what the cut-off date is but seeing as how this doesn't have any Arabic numerals I assume it falls into the "older" category.

But like I said the only thing that I think looks like a date I have circled in the detail below (it is a bit blurry in the picture) and since the first and last character are the same and the middle two characters are the same I would assume that would make it 2002 but that's a guess based entirely on my idea of logic. Anyone here read Thai? lol

Thanks Sap! I actually just started to look up Thai numerals after that and saw that it was 2552 and that confused the heck out of me. Thanks for clearing up the date for me, you rock!

Yes the date is indeed 2552 and since we are currently on 2555 that would make yours 2009. BE to AD = -543.

All the standard type circulation coins only have the Thai BE dates in Thai numerals only. Some (but only very occassionally) you might get a 10 Baht Commemorative circulation coin (eg. an ASEAN Summit Meeting)that has English writing and the AD date in western numerals.

Sorry about that. I was going off the Wikipedia date conversion.
