Hey everyone, I found this quarter in circulation and think it may be a Grease Filled Die strike. The little bit of research I have been able to drum up suggests that may be so but it is on a Washington State Quarter and everywhere I've seen only talks about the Kansas State Quarter.

So I was hoping to hear what you all think.

State-Quarter-Grease-Filled-Die-Strike? State-Quarter-Grease-Filled-Die-Strike? State-Quarter-Grease-Filled-Die-Strike?

The T in TRUST looks like it was struck through a little bit of grease. This commonly happens on all coins of all denominations and for this small amount has no extra value to it. When the struck through area is much larger then it begins to have some collector value.

Aye when it comes to greasers, the more grease, the merrier. Keep your eyes out for lots of it:

Thanks for the conclusions and example of what to look for. What kind of premium would an example like yours fetch Steve?

If I were to sell it (but I'm not) I'd ask for $5-7, since it's such an extreme example, and on my favorite State Quarter design. :-) The only greasers that sell for more are proofs, as they're rather rare.

If the T on yours was *completely* filled in (so it read "In God We Rust") I've seen such pieces go for $2-5.

How much does condition factor into these sorts of errors? This is considered an error right? I consistently check my pocket change for things like this so most likely if I ever do find something as complete as your example or description then it will not be in the greatest of shape.

I personally would not call this an error. I think it is too small of an area and would be considered an acceptable strike.

I meant a strike through Grease Filled Die in general (not necessarily my coin). Is that generally considered an error or a variety? I'm still learning what the difference is between those designations.

I was mostly interested in finding out if I correctly identified what happened to this coin or if it was just normal wear on the coin. Trying to hone my skills and train more on what to look for.

I see. This would fall into the error catagory (specifically a struck through error) and not a variety.
