Hi. I have a collection of canadian circulation grade coins which are mostly from the 1940s to the 2000s. Most of them are currently being stored in old plastic sheets for photo slides. The sheets are made by print file and are called archive preservers. I was wondering if this is a safe way to store the coins long term or if the plastic will cause them to deteriorate. None of my coins are real expensive, but some are in really good condition and I want them to stay that way.

It depends on what the plastic is made from. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is bad. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is good. If you are looking for long-term storage solutions, why not utilize tried and true products for coins, like albums, or 2x2s, or Saflips (PET), or storage tubes, etc.

I use 2x2 Mylar / cardboard flips in archival quality PET (NOT PVC) album pages.
About 3,500 coins are stored in this way.

You can write all of the details on the holders.
If you move the flips around the the collection, the information moves with the coin. I record price paid and when, and an identification of the coin; essential with World coins, ancient to modern.

Best way to store them, especially if you want to enjoy them. It is very easy to look at and handle them when they are stored in this fashion. And as Sel said, you can move them around in your collection with ease.

I just started to collect years and have been putting them in NUMIS-sheets for albums, anyone else uses these?

I'd agree with previous posters and go with 2x2s.

what about those plastic bead bags from Michaels? Seems like I get a lot of coins in those, and just bought a box of them for my bullion coins.
