Found this one online. According to the seller it was minted in Ravenna (I checked around the internet and it seems to indeed be from this mint) and it is $21 shipped. The fact that it is a Ravenna coin (obviously a scarcer mint) pretty much drives my desire to buy it (also would be nice to have a forward-facing Justinian, which I don't have yet). What are your thoughts, concerns, opinions, etc. on this coin? Thanks.

Hi ValiantKnight ...

Ummm, to me, the coin doesn't have a huge "eye-appeal" factor ... but if you've done the research and you've determined that it is a good-value deal, then knock yourself out!!

... although I realize that some coins are highly collectible merely due to their "rareness factor", I still strive to find nice looking coins that have cool eye-appeal ...

Man, I love thumbing-through my collections and stopping dead in my tracks when I see "one of my favourites!!" (priceless)

... ummm, but you know me, I'm a sucker for ancient coins with animals on 'em!! ... oh, and don't forget about the "Glow in the dark dinosaur!!"

Thanks steve. I know it wouldn't win any ancient coin beauty contests but it isn't terrible-looking either and it indeed does kind of have that "rareness factor", at least to me.

Be careful with those coins. Heard they were radioactive

What I've done is requested a front facing coin with a batch of uncleaned from the middle east hoard thats flooded the market - However, if its the mint you want, knock yourself out.

Now this is scary. I happen to agree with Jerry. Not much eye appeal, rare or not. I'm not sure how rare coins are from Ravenna. I do not have any, but I have seen some for sale from this mint. Bottom line to this is: what do you want and what do you find appealing. That's all that matters.

Compare above. This is expensive but has details yours doesn't. You are paying a lot for Ravenna. For $21 you might get a larger Constantinople with a face so you might ask what it is that is driving the desire. If it is the face you like, I'd get one with a face.

Revenna mint coins are rarer as you say. From what I can tell the only indication I can see is how the regnal year is written. Wish there were more detail to go by. IMO the price was a little high based on the coins condition.

Thanks all for your replies. I was a bit on the fence about this one and that is why I posted it. Looks like my hard-earned cash will be going elsewhere.

Or you could ask for a lower price and see what the seller says.

Mmm I don't see the point of buying such poor coins despite rarity.Save up and buy a no regret coin.

I agree... after a year of buying everything and then upgrading. It cost less just buying a nice coin in the first place. Your good at finding good deals on coins and I'm sure you studied the details about this coin now go use your new knowledge and go find a keeper. :)

Thanks jessvc1 It was one of only a few Ravenna-mint coins I found and the only one within my budget, and I most likely would have passed on by if I had found the one that dougsmit posted.
