Unsure about the galley on your coin, but the warships of that time were made to ram other ships in order to sink or board. With no cannon/gun powder, that was the way of naval warfare.

I never know where to post a coin when selecting between the several coin groups I read. I try to guess where a specific coin will be more appreciated but I erred here it seems. Last April I got on of these and was seeking help reading the date. You might be interested in some of the replies I got on my coin which would apply to yours. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/bo...opic=79473.0I don't know if you can read some of the date by wiggling the coin in hand better than on the photo. I bought mine because it was more legible than these usually are (and cheap - to be honest about it). Reading those numerals is hard enough when they are all clear.

Very interesting post.
Nice OP coin, even though it looks to be a bit over-cleaned.

Thanks for all your replies! I like this coin because of its portrait and the reverse. Those triple pointed prowls where a major force in their day! Check out this cool site: http://www.bigscalemodels.com/ships...perator.htmlDoug. Thanks for posting your thread! Very cool info. BTW, I can not see the date on the posted coin. Does anyone know what calender the Pheonician's used and how it matches up to our calender today?

As I understand In 260-259 BC the city regained freedom under Antiochus II so that date marked an era. I do not know when they stopped using that system. 260 - the date numeral = BC.
