... I'm betting $10 bucks that says that there's gonna be a whole poop-load of Byzantine collectors that are gonna come outta the woodwork with gorgeous and far rarer Byzantine coins ...

Hey, but if you're not the Byzantine guy, then maybe you can give us a hint for the next SMACKDOWN event?

While not a coin, but a token this is my most important piece from the Byzantine era. In fact to me it's probably the most important piece in my entire collection. It is a True Cross Token, made from a small amount of ash and clay from the true cross of Jesus Christ in the sixth century.

There was Alexander "the great", Constantine "the great", and Justinian also went by Justinian "the great".

MORE OFFICIAL RULES: (or rules anyway)

I posted the first coinat 9:22pm Manitoba Time (yes, that's the official clock) ... so tomorrow at 9:22pm Manitoba time, the deadline will be enforced!!

Voting will also be one calendar day ... so we'll know the winner of the first SMACKDOWN (Byzantine), plus if I still have my poop together, we'll post the 2nd category of SMACKDOWN (plus or minus a few hours)

... still sound fun? .. or again, should I quit this Tom-Foolery?

I note that the rules read two coins per person but so far we see singles. I'll give two. One is my messiest overstrike being Heraclius and Heraclius Constantine 40 nummi (side by side standing figures obverse and M reverse) over Phocas (facing portrait over XXXX reverse. Both strikes retain their Constantinople mintmarks The photo shows the undertype Phocas oriented 'up' so the top strike has its top to the right. This makes it easier to see both parts. What makes this coin doubly special to me is the TIB at obverse left which looks like the style used by Tiberius Constantine. If so, the coin is a triple use overstrike but the TIB is awfully clear to be an under/undertype so I'm open to other explanations.

My second entry is just a reasonably straight forward and clear example of a large silver coin of the next to last Byzantine emperor (the last cheap one!) John VIII (1423-1448 AD). These have a lot of legend and rarely show even half of it. At least this one shows the name IWAN (outer ring starting at the top).
