I found this quarter when searching through change. I was wondering if anyone else has seen a coin altered in such a way?

I got one a while ago about smokers. It was punched into a nickel.

I have a few pre-1860's coin that I use for Civil War displays. Most of them are damaged in some way or another, many with this cross/X deep scratch. Any idea what this was for? My guess is it was for looking for fake coins that had been plated.
