Hi all, I just got this 1838 Large cent and it has a lot going on. First I was wondering if I could get help on it Newcomb variety. Second though , you can see by the pictures there is a lage amount of "missing" metal on the cheek. It does not appear to me to be post mint because the metal is not displaced, it is simply not there and has smooth surfaces like the rest of the coin. There is also a peculiarity at the nose which appears more likely to be PMD, but the "wart" causes me to believe maybe not. Thirdly there is what appears to be a crack in the planchet at about 1:30 that goes from the rim to the hair ties. It does not appear raised, but then at the rim id creates a small Cud between denticles. Any thoughts on any or all of these ? Thanks to all!

They look like post mint damage to me. The gouge below the star also has a scratch running out to the rim. There are multiple hits on the face, neck, temple and hair. Reverse has hits on One Cent.

But wouldn't that large of a hit on the cheek cause raised areas around it? Where did all the metal go? Even if it was "scooped out" it would have rougher surfaces wouldn't it? Any ideas on the N variety?

Looks like it had a very short but rough circulation. If you look at the right of the gouge, there is some raised metal that mostly wore away.

PMD, its a shame, it would be in such good shape otherwise.
