murrellington: I have quite a few recent associations with Balboa Park.
My daughter in law used to live quite near to Balboa Park in Brant Street, under the flight path to Lindbergh Field. Beautiful views over SD Harbour, and out to Point Loma. She now lives in Sydney, quite close to me.
I couldn't resist adding a SD Half Dollar to my collection.
Actually, if you go into Google Maps, terrestrial photos, it is possible to almost get the exact view shown on the coin. Some buildings have changed a bit since 1935.
There is a Moreton Bay fig tree in Balboa Park. These trees can grow to a huge size. The example in Balboa Park is bigger that any I have seen in Australia. This tree was imported from Brisbane as a seedling.
SD Zoo is within Balboa Park. This Zoo was the first in the World to successfully breed Koalas outside Australia. The leaves in their diet is very specific, and is restricted to only seven species of hundreds of species of eucalyptus trees.
The reason why the coastal belt of Southern California is so subject to bushfires like parts of Australia, is that the trees that burn are all descendants of seedlings imported from Australia. The seedlings were brought into the U.S. to grow hardwood for railroad sleepers.
When I go to a coin show, I take cash only; that restricts me to a pre planned budget. I go around to all of the tables first, making up a 'short list' of coins I may wish to buy. I then go back and examine each of these more closely, before making a decision to buy.
Had lots of fun also with coin shows in England, as well as as in Australia.
