So I went to the Coinarama coin show in San Diego. It was a few miles from my house. It was a great experience. There was a guy a few weeks back that I sold coins to on craigslist and we have kept in contact, and he is the one that invited me to the show. I had no idea the show was going to happen but I'm glad he told me about it. My wife really wanted to go because she is a great support of my hobby. I absolutely loved it. I had no money to spend but I loved looking at the coins and she actually fell in love with a coin. The San Diego Comm half dollar. I told her how it has balboa park on the reverse and now she really wants one. We are actually going to go to another show up north in the future on her terms. I love it! We were younger than everyone at the show by like 50 years but it was great fun. I met up with a cool new coin friend, and got to experience a coin show. Can't wait for my next one, which I will hopefully have money to spend at.
I'm also glad my wife cares about my hobby. I have been collecting since december 2010 and a few times I tried to give up the hobby but she wouldn't let me because she sees my passion in it. Great woman she is.

Was anyone else at this show?

murrellington: I have quite a few recent associations with Balboa Park.

My daughter in law used to live quite near to Balboa Park in Brant Street, under the flight path to Lindbergh Field. Beautiful views over SD Harbour, and out to Point Loma. She now lives in Sydney, quite close to me.

I couldn't resist adding a SD Half Dollar to my collection.

Actually, if you go into Google Maps, terrestrial photos, it is possible to almost get the exact view shown on the coin. Some buildings have changed a bit since 1935.

There is a Moreton Bay fig tree in Balboa Park. These trees can grow to a huge size. The example in Balboa Park is bigger that any I have seen in Australia. This tree was imported from Brisbane as a seedling.

SD Zoo is within Balboa Park. This Zoo was the first in the World to successfully breed Koalas outside Australia. The leaves in their diet is very specific, and is restricted to only seven species of hundreds of species of eucalyptus trees.

The reason why the coastal belt of Southern California is so subject to bushfires like parts of Australia, is that the trees that burn are all descendants of seedlings imported from Australia. The seedlings were brought into the U.S. to grow hardwood for railroad sleepers.

When I go to a coin show, I take cash only; that restricts me to a pre planned budget. I go around to all of the tables first, making up a 'short list' of coins I may wish to buy. I then go back and examine each of these more closely, before making a decision to buy.

Had lots of fun also with coin shows in England, as well as as in Australia.

It is great when the family supports the hobby too.
My wife has grown to "deal with" my hobby of currency collecting. Now that I do presentations on the subject, she has a greater apperciation for it.
I am now one of few suject matter experts on Early Kansas Banknotes.
And when people come up to me ask for my opinion on a note or ask detailed questions, she is in W O W.

Lot of cool information sel, thanks!

And I know what you mean ragpicker. Sometimes when I talk about history of certain coins or coin composition or something it can be impressive.

You are a very lucky man. I couldn't get my fiance to go even with the promise of a new piece of jewelry. Ragpicker and I are in the same boat my fiance will deal with it and thats as far as it goes. She slowly pick up things and then surprise me when she starts talking like she read a book or something.

Hey yeah I was at that show too, Brought my son with me. It was my Birthday so I was allowed to go. Seems like your set with your Lady. My wife wants nothing to do with it. I also felt like I was the younger one in the crowd. Ill be back next year. By the way I picked up a very cool pattern while I was there, a very unique coin and a highlight in my collection. See you there next year.

That would have been cool to meet some other CCF members, but I went on last notice. I'll definitely be there next year. What coin did you pick up travis2005?
