A large safe would certainly be better than a shoebox... Which is all I got at the moment.

I'm in the same boat as you right now Dohmenator haha. I did find a pretty cool little coin safe on craigslist a couple days ago but never heard back from the lister. Besides it didn't look too much larger than a shoebox and the lock/combo mech didn't work.

One helpful hint to those of you buying safes on CL. If they deliver it to your house make sure you call a locksmith and get the combo changed. It will cost you around $50 but its way worth the money IMHO.

But to take it one step further meet them somewhere public instead so they don't know where you live. You should definitely get the combo changed either way though.

Did the Post Office give you any warranty on that thing?

I am still in progress of figuring out what I am going to put in there. Some things are gonna stay at my home vault as I like to play with my coins. Plus, I still haven't got into my fathers vault since he died last November so I have about 800 oz in there but I can't bring myself to opening it yet. I know I am kind of emotional about it. I will post a couple pictures as soon as they are available.
Sel 69l,
Was that a joke? First I bought it second hand and also it was made in 1951 something tells me the warranty expired lol

AWESOME! If you have a metal fabricator near by, you can have them made at a reasonable price. I have a guy that lives down the street that can do this if you need.

throwbackid, I just picked up the younger brother today. This is a 1960 P.O. safe. The wooden shelf box comes right out if you take out the 6 screws (3 ea. side) that are on the left & right of the door jamb. Did you get the key to change the combo? Mine came with it & they walked me through on how to change my combo. Do you know how much they weigh? I looked for tags, but, couldn't find anything.

Those wheels will leave really savage marks in your carpet. Would suggest remove the wheels, or have the safe stand on a 3/4 inch thick piece of multi layered plywood.

That is way cool. I didn't get the key to change the combo but my friend has one I could use though I don't feel as if I need to change it. Also, mine tipped the scale at right around 1,900 lbs according to the post master, he said he used some kind of truck scale to weigh it.
I do like you're shelving system better then mine though I may go the route you suggested and have a metal fabricator come out and work up some plans for shelving.
If you don't mind me asking you where did you get yours at?
Looks so similar you can tell they didn't vary the design much, excellent find.

The shelves are all adjustable. Saw it on craigslist. I picked it up in Springfield Mass. This is also a 277 same as yours. so, I can say w/ confidence that it is also 1900lb.

Way cool Chris, love the red Olds in the background.
Do you mind PMing me what you paid or posting it if you don't mind. I think it is fair to say spec wise we have the same vault.
Take care
