I'm trying to put together a birth year collection for my daughter whose birth date is July 4, 2010. I just bought a proof set of the Presidential $1 coins. What else should I pick up? Her grandparents are generous, so I think I can go for a little bit expensive. What do you think of the presidential spouse gold coins? What else can I get from 2010?

Theres a lot from 2010. Id suggest a silver proof set which will cover the coins actually in use. An ASE would be nice too theres proof and uncir versions from 2010 as well as a bullion. I like the proof and uncir a lot personally. Im not a fan of the presidential gold spouse coins myself but if you can do it go for it. I do really like the Gold ASEs and the gold Buffalos which would be my personal preference as far as gold goes. The platinum ASEs are really nice too. Theres also 5 5oz america the beautiful silver coins from 2010 but they seem to be the hardest to find being the first year they were made. Maybe pick up the modern boy scout and disabled veterans commemorative coins as well. Theres a lot to choose from from 2010

I put in a bid for a silver proof set. I need to talk to my husband and in laws, but I love the ASE coins, gold silver and platinum. I know my father in law likes those too, so maybe we can talk about picking up some. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know what I add to the collection.

Think outside the coinbox a bit, and look at 1910 and 1810. 'This coin is as old as you are, this coin is one hundred years older than you, and this coin is two hundred years older than you!'

I like that thinking, ArrowsAndRays. I got those kind of dates rattling around for myself and close family members as I collect the older/silver stuff

That is a very interesting idea!
Has anyone mentioned the obvious - Mint Uncirculated Sets from each mint?

I wonder if there is a way to use the 7-4-2010 to make a set of some kind. Possibly 7 coins of one type. 4 coins of a different type. Then something to mean 2010 or just the 10. Not sure but might be worth thinking about. Possibly on a plaque in some order with a baby photo.

There's a whole world of coins out there .... say you have and Irish heritage ... get a 2010 collectors set from that country. Depending on the country, there might be some really interesting commemoratives from 2010.

Here's what I've done for my two girls, one born in 2009, and one expected to arrive this November: For 2009: 2009 U.S. Silver Proof Set, 2009 American Silver Eagle (bullion version), 2009 Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar (proof and uncirculated), 2009 Uncirculated Mint Set, and one 2009 Australian Lunar 1-oz Silver Proof Coin (celebrating the Year of the Rabbit). For 2012, very similar: 2012 U.S. Silver Proof Set, 2012 American Silver Eagle (bullion version), 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Silver Dollar (proof and uncirculated), 2012 Uncirculated Mint Set, one 2012 Australian Lunar 1-oz Silver Proof Coin (celebrating the Year of the Dragon), and one each of the circulation quality 2012 S-mint-marked quarters (as they come out). Doing all of that gets a little pricey (runs over $300 for each kiddo), but I think it provides a pretty cool selection of the year's coins representing proof, uncirculated, and bullion, and all of the mint marks. I'll likely leave the uncirculated coins in their packaging and put them away, but for the proof coins and ASE for each daughter I hope to leave the proof set coins in their lenses, put the other coins in air-tites, and have the coins custom-framed together, along with a baby picture and a matte with the name and date of birth. I'll admit that including commemoratives is a little weird, and I only did so because the 2009 Lincoln and 2012 SSB commemoratives are the only ones I find appealing and own in my own collection, and probably would not have put a commem in either girl's birth year set otherwise. I'll also admit that the Australian Lunar Coin is something that most wouldn't do, but I did so because my wife is Vietnamese-American, and the Lunar calendar is part the Viet culture. Many foreign mints are doing the Lunar coins (I think Canada started in 2010), but I picked Australia as I liked their designs the most, even though I'm not a fan of a living monarch being depicted on the obverses of these coins. Hopefully we've given you good ideas on what you can do for your little girl. Good luck!

I love these ideas! Thank you all for sharing. I do have a couple 1910 coins, including a 1910 LWC I just picked up. I love the idea of the 1910, 1810. My husband is of Irish and Italian descent. I am of Irish and English decent, although I am proud of my American heritage as my father's ancestors came over in early 1600s. If only they had kept some of their coins for me. I spoke with my father in law today and he said he was thinking of picking up the 2010 Silver Proof set for her. I will share these other ideas with them. And bkprewitt, congrats on the news of a baby girl due in November. I love your idea of framing with a photo.

Just an idea, Weezer, When he opportunity arises pick up a few coins from 1910 as well. Something about a coin that is 100 years older than a child is magical. My own "magic:" an 1851 one dollar gold piece. I have a 1951 half dollar as well. Neither is special except to me.
Edit: Oh, you already thought of this.

I didn't think of it, another member did and I love the idea! I love it so much, we picked up an 1810 half capped bust this past weekend.
