I was just wondering if it is possible to distinguish a pocket piece from a coin that actually circulated just based on the wear pattern.

<---- guessing, maybe the marks from pocket contact with other coins would be glancing scratches and circulated marks would be straighter direct impacts

Coins in circulation tend to wear the details down flat, the wear sustained by a pocket piece makes the details on the coin mushier and mushier but the detail retains it's basic shape of relief.

A VERY worn circulation coin is flat, the equivalent pocket pice is lumpy.

I think it is almost impossible to tell which is which. The reason is there are to many variables. Such as a pocket piece could be mixed in with one coin, two coins, etc. Could even be packed in with lots of coins. Or just put in a pouch where it hardly ever moves. Similar with coins in circulation. For a long time? With many other coins? In circulation but never touched by other coins?
Just to many variables.

I think the difference is that a pocket piece can and will wear down to a much lower grade, while a worn coin in circulation is likely to be retired by a bank. That being said, I do not think one would be able to tell an early stage pocket piece from any other circulated coin in similar grade. Much of the circulation wear comes from being in the pocket with other items. Also, a pocket piece is often "handled" just as much as a coin in circulation (I know I was always playing with my Eisenhower dollar pocket piece).

Thanks a lot for all the comments. Many of the coins that I see in low grades, the rim wears into the stars and lettering but the flat outline of the central design is visible. I was looking at some 1921 morgans graded PO-1 on Heritage and on some of them you can see about half of the rim while some of central design elements are barely visible. Below are two of the examples that I was looking at.
