Hello, I've just registered with this forum, however let me preface this inquiry by stating that I am not a coin collector, I simply would like some information on a coin in my posession, I hope this will not offend anyone, if so, please accept my apologies in advance, as I said, I know little about coins, but Google told me there was a man who did, and suggested that very man may be within the ranks of you fine fellows.

I have this coin, which was given to me a few years ago by a female friend ( who was insistent that I should invest in gold, as the Saviours parousia may be upon us sooner rather than later and gold may be advantageous at that point.)...so..NO...I didn't find it in my grandfather's attic chest and it was not acquired at a house clearance.

The coin appears to be gold, what flavour I'm uncertain,( carat ) but it is as follows.

19.6mm in diameter.
0.75mm in thickness
.3.5grams in weight.

These are photos of front and rear of the coin.

Thank you in advance for any information, assistance or help.

Thank you very much gentlemen, that pretty much answers all my questions, I had pretty much gleaned that it was Austro-Hungarian Empire, but little more, now it's off to ebay, help me to secure a new MacBook Air :d

A fine and informative forum you have here, tis pity I'm not a numismatist ( I hope and trust that term is not seen as derogatory )...I feel guilty enough for taking advantage of your expertise, mine is horology and photography !

As an adjunct to my post above, may I ask what the TLA...UNC stands for...uncirculated perhaps and does this 1909 carry any other significance over the 1915 coins I see on ebay, I notice the coin strikings are slightly different on the ( I presume front ) of the coin, the year position varies, is this a common ocurrence?

Thank you !

Yes, "Unc" is short for Uncirculated. For coin collectors, condition greatly affects value - the less wear a coin has, the more valuable it is.

As for the difference between 1909 and 1915 coins, there is one significant difference: 1915 coins were restruck by the Austrian Republic government between 1920 and 1936; that date is far more common than other dates, and therefore only worth just above bullion value, no matter what condition it's in. A genuinely Unc 1909 ducat could be worth a hundred dollars or more above its face value to a collector. Given the scratches visible on your coin, it probably won't fetch much if any numismatic premium.

Hi, thanks again, interesting comments regarding this coin, incidentally the 'scratches' that you mention are not actually scratches, it's residue from Rodicon a watchsmiths sticky putty that I used to hold the coin in place, I should have lain the coin flat for the photos, I'll try to post some better photos later, is there anything that should be avoided or recommended for cleaning coins, common sense would dictate that nothing abrasive is the answer...yes?

Having determined a little more about the coin, I'm re-considering selling it!

Thanks again chaps.
