I've just seen this 8 Reales coin on sale in "Mercado Libre" Mexico, a kind of ebay, but I also looked it up in "RESPLANDORES" and the rays under the cap are quite different from "Resplandores" to this one... I've wondered if it is a forgery or not... what do you think about it?
Best regards,
Chucky117

Chucky117 Since you have the book "Resplandores" you have an advantage over most collectors. If you notice between 1857 and 1873 the San Luis Potosi was run by a series of private lessors - NOT the Mexican government. Also in that time frame, the coins of Pi are not terribly well made.

What I believe you have here is a badly treated original. I say this for the following reasons:

1. More than one die was made for 1863 with RO assayer initials. The coin is not rare enough to indicate a single die variety.

2. The working dies were NOT made from full hubs. If you look at dates before and after 1863 in Resplandores you will notice that the letters and numbers all vary in EVERY picture. For instance the superscript I next to the P is in a different location on each.

3. In 1863 MOST mints were using a King Punch which included rays - but Potosi was not. Check ray positions on all of the caps in the style group and you will see there is variation in location and angle.

When using Resplandores make sure you take into account the die making clues that it provides.

AN EXACT MATCH IS NOT ALWAYS REQUIRED FOR AN ORIGINAL.
