I've been curious about others experience with how one portion of a box compares to the other portions. Maybe a special roll in a box or one row of coins that has a lot of keepers and the other rows don't. This may be hard to follow because I don't really know how to word it, so I'll just start with an example of my own experience:

When I'm looking at nickels, my experience has been that one end of the box may be filled with valuable coins and the other end not. For example, I found 11 V nickels on the left 1/3 of a box but didn't find any in the other 2/3. I've experienced similar (but not as obvious) with other boxes of nickels. To contrast, I've opened many boxes of halves, I've gotten 1/3 in to the box with nothing and I'm hoping the box will "turn around" and start producing but that never really happens. I'm expecting some day to work the top half and find nothing and then all of a sudden the bottom half produces 10 or 20 silvers...but it hasn't happened.

Please share your experiences.

My thought is that the coins have typically made a few stops before getting rolled. Assuming they go to the bank, they get mixed with other coins when counted and bagged on the bank coin machine. Then they are either sent to a central bank or directly to the courier, where they are probably mixed again before being rolled. Some boxes seem to reflect this as they seem thoroughly mixed. Yet I remember the only box of quarters I've worked had 3 mint state 1964's in one roll and the rest of the box was a skunk.

I think the interesting bit is probably what happens between rolling and getting put in the box. Is this process entirely automated? Can you end up with rolls from one batch getting mixed with rolls that were processed in another batch? We need someone who works/worked at a courier to give us the lowdown.
