So I finally got my Girlfriends sister to start ordering me bokes of kennedys from the FED. I got my first box today. Does anyone have any hints of searching these coins for silver? I dont want to make a big mess having 1000 coins all over the place. I have a scale. what are the weight other roll hunters use as perameters for opening the rolls.

I had her order me two more boxes that will be there next week.

i go one roll at a time. peel the top, look at them, put them back in the roll and close it back up.
I dont use a scale, but I'm also looking for more than silver.

good luck!

yeah I also go roll to roll and peel it open look at edges and then look through the rest and after I'm done with the roll I have a bank bag(the light tan ones from the bank) that I dump them into after I finish the roll

SO I opened all %500 worth. I found one silver coin. I also kept a few that were in really good condition. Many of them are badly damaged from what I would guess is the machine that sorts them. How can you tell if a coin is a proof coin? and what other varieties should I be looking for?

hmmm well it appears that MOnks is very helpful.....you really took time out of your life to post that....interesting

anyways
congrats on finding somewhere that can get you boxes! A lot of banks say they can't, charge fees, or wont order them for you.
Next, I always search the edges as well as the faces of the coins. I reroll them because I return the whole box box to the bank as I got it because there are no free coin counting machines at the banks in my area. If your bank has a coin counting machine you might be better off to just take in a bag or bucket or box of loose coins to be counted by the machine.

When I look at the edges of the coin I am looking for the silver edge which just gets me excited and gets me the silver 2 seconds quicker.
When I look at the faces of the coins I look for proofs, die cracks, Cuds, counterstamps or anything else that really jumps out. There are many errors you can find, and since I really don't look for them I don't know too much about them for the JFKs. I also check the faces of the coins in case I missed a silver edge. This hasn't happened to me yet with halves, but dimes and quarters have slipped by my first glance because the edges of the coins were dirty or worn down.

As far as what else you can keep, I would suggest grabbing a whitman folder (I know they are claimed to be bad for coins) or a dansco album to store a date set in. I find that if you are new and don't know if you will like building a date set, you buy a cheap 3 dollar folder rather then a 25 dollar album. If you like collecting a date set after you buy the folder you can always upgrade. Find really nice examples from circulation finds and build a set of them. It's simple and fun. I have done that with many coins, and I personally find it to be much more fun then just searching for silver.
***proof JFK coins will have an "S" mintmark on the front of the coin and will might or might not have a shiny surface depending on how long or how harshly it was circulated.
What silver half did you find?
good luck, and hopefully you will have more success going forward.

hopefully this was a more helpful response

I found a 68 heavily tarnished coin. I'm getting 2in more boxes early next week. I guess I am pretty lucky because she his willing to order them for me. Most banks don't. She did tell me that I was not aloud to return them to her because she has no way of getting rid of them.

Got my two more boxes today. I was also given two cwr and got a 1967 half in one of them. no silver in the boxes yet but I did get a 1992 proof and a 1989 D bicentennial of the congress clad half dollar. I have never seen this coin so I was pretty happy to find it.

Congrats on the finds. Believe it or not that is a good start for 3 boxes. :)
