My Dad has this penny and I found it to be very unusual. It seems that the coin has partial image of the backside stamped right on Lincoln's face. Has anyone ever seen this type of error on the 1983 D penny? Any information will be helpful. Thanks in advance!

to the forum!

It's not an error coin. Looks like it has glue on it. This coin was once glued to another penny leaving the impression of the reverse of the other penny in the glue. It's just an ordinary penny worth one cent.

Other than soap and water, is there any chemical or liquid that I can apply to dissolve this glue without harming the coin? I am new at this hobby and I want to be able to use the right techniques to ensure that all of my coins are maintained clean. Thanks again for all your helpful advice.

Acetone, but be careful it is a little dangerous to use. Use the search box upper left of page.

I would strongly advise to never try to clean or otherwise "improve" any coins in your collection. 99% of the time, you'll end up doing more harm than good. Just leave them as is.

For this coin, acetone will indeed take the glue off, but this coin is only worth its face value. You'll use more than one cent worth of acetone to get the glue off. So unless this coin has some sentimental significance, I wouldn't even bother with trying to get the glue off. I would just spend it.

Also, any solvent you use will cost you more than the value of your coin (1c).
