All,
I'm really hesitant to ask this question of people who have devoted a lot of time in the science of numismatics, but necessity is overruling squeamishness.

I am in the process of leaving my current employer and returning home (I've been working overseas for about 10 years). Some would call this retirement, but out of necessity, both fiscally and intellectually, I will be seeking other employment once I get settled in next year.

Interestingly enough, my beginning study of coins has played a key role in my deciding to move on. I've been with my current employer for 27 years now and the 'challenge' has left the building, so to speak. Getting into coins earlier this year has shown me that I need to look for something new to do to keep my brain active.

Having said this, I was wondering what opportunities there might be out there for employment within the community. As far as knowledge of coins... that will take years and probably not produce much opportunity for a steady income. But I have some pretty strong skills in databases and computers. I am also a serious amateur photographer who has quite a bit of equipment.

Any feedback you might have would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Terry McManus

Everybody makes about four fundamental changes in the direction of their employment in their lifetime. That can cause a great deal of stress for some who have a chosen a career path, that for some reason or other, can no longer be persued. Some are successful in their new career direction, some are not.

Suddenly, all of your training and your skill set may no longer be relevant to a forced change in your employment.

Fortunate are those who are able rebuild themselves to answer the demands of a new career, and to prosper just as succesfully as before in that new career. Considerable re skilling and training is often required, with some or all of the old skills and training wasted.

It is important to keep your skill set and training up to date. Retrenchment is often the result if you don't. Who would want to go to a doctor whose training is 25 years out of date?

Depending on the amount of coins you now have, becoming a coin dealer today is a bit on the late side. Already to many attempts to open a coin store, start a new coin web site and even sell on ebay is sort of over done now.
This coin collecting craze reminds me of the VHS tape stores taht popped up all over the world. Now only a memory. So many of those appeared then vanished overnight.
Looking for a job is what many millions are presently doing all over the country lately. On the block I live about 50% are out of work. Hope you do better.
Sorry for the pessimistic reply.

hey terry, I'm also long in the career tooth and think about what else I could do to be productive and pay me a few bucks a week. I'm glad you asked the question, always looking for ideas, I live in community of 50,000 within a larger statistical area of 250k. we've got 2 coin clubs and a single coin shop downtown, I would guess that most of his walk-in business is buying or selling bullion of some form. Coins are his main thing but I think pure numismatic shops are in the larger urban areas. ........... huge amount of coin business is conducted on line. didn't you say you were tech guy. BINGO WOW ... royalties for this epiphany at your discretion, of course. best of luck
