What can anyone tell me about the 1887 large cent "double 7". I don't see it listed in CCN or Charltons, but I saw it listed on the CoinsandCanada website. I have a beautiful MS64 Red 1887. I noticed a small "tail" on the 7 and I see that it matches one of the pictures from the mentioned web site. Is it going to be a recognized variety. According to that website, its worth quite a bit.

The 2011 Charlton Catalogue contained an excellent summary of a number of large cent varieties, including 4 1887 repunched 7 varieties with large photos of each. The catalogue priced all four versions at about 2x the regular coins. As with all catalogue values, you would probably want to look at actual sale prices to determine true value.

"Is it going to be a recognized variety."-tfred
Every difference-observed on a coin through the eyes of a hobbyist (person) ... "is-a-recognized-variety"...
Have to agree with Smallcentguy ... researching past sales is a good idea to help determine where the interest of fellow hobbyists are at with any coin...
Testing the waters yourself (easy-to-do), is another way to determine the interest of others...

PS while Charlton lists values at 2x the regular coins in grades up to MS60, it does not value grades higher than MS60. I am not sure whether an MS64 coin would get the same percentage premium. I suspect not...
I have noticed that coinsandcanada posts some pretty lofty valuations on high grade varieties such as "hanging" 1950s cents and the 1929 high 9. There are very few market transactions in such high grade pieces. I suspect their variety values are high across the board.
As an example, I somewhat recently picked up an ICCS MS66 1959 Hanging 9 cent at the price of a regular one. It wasn't being sold as a hanging 9, but the seller was quite sophisticated so I suspect he felt that the variety was not worth anything extra....or may even be looked at as a flaw on an MS66 coin.....

I'll probably throw it up on ebay with a big price and a best offer option just to test the waters. Keep an eye out for it.

It is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If two people want the same coin, you will then benefit from that...

Agree with SPP, ... but would add that "expendable-income" does come into play as well... At the lofty-price of 20¢ per month, per listing to "lease space" from ebay ... one can discover many things... Been toying with an idea for some time now and have decided to go-forward with same shortly on ebay ... hopefully, I will receive a more-accurate understanding of values, by doing such... Will start with my 1872 25¢ "sedition" piece... Of course my idea will only work ... if people partake in such with complete honesty-on-their-part... Look forward to seeing your listing tfred! dts...

Appreciate the link tfred!
According to Trends Jan 17 2012 (if I'm reading it correctly) ... a MS64 1887 1¢ is valued at 550.00...
But wait, if you act now : ) ... add 50 - 100% for a "100% full Red" coin ... yours looks "full-red" to my eyes ... so another 550.00 is in order...
Base point value = 1,100.00...
An additional 700.00 for the number 7-difference might seem a little high to some ... but, it does look like your coin also has something going on with the second 8...
Considering that a "Plain-Jane MS65" is valued at the "bargain-basement-low-low price of 2,250.00" plus any additional RED-FACTOR that might be applied and keeping well-in-mind that MS65 is only 1-point (4-quarters)away from your MS64 coin...
Your asking price appears to be very-well thought-out and you have indicated that 1,800.00 is not expected...
Nice coin, but well-beyond my "expendable-income" reach...
