The Lafayette dollar is the only commemorative that PCGS lists with a coin for each grade. The 93 Columbian is missing only a VG08. Which would be the easiest to complete a grading set? It's obvious which would be the most expensive.

With just some quick math in my head it seems like it would cost just as much if not more to put that together as it would a complete high end set.

An interesting question...
I don't have access to a current PCGS Pop Report, but I would think that more circulated Lafayette dollars have been submitted for grading due to the fact that they are a scarcer coin and carry a premium across all grades -- folks tend to submit scarcer/more valuable coins to ensure authenticity and establish a grade for possible resale. 1893 Columbians, on the other hand, are far more common and generally carry a low purchase price for circulated examples. The cost of submission/grading may surpass the value of the coin in some cases.
Both coins are readily available in higher grades, so the top end of a grading set wouldn't be a challenge for either coin. On the lower end of the scale, however, I would assume that there are more PCGS-graded circulated Lafayettes available than 1893 Columbians. So, I vote that the Columbian set would be tougher to complete due to fewer coins being available in the marketplace.

Quote: I don't have access to a current PCGS Pop Report Just a friendly fyi, even without paying for it the coinfacts site does usually let you view 1 or 2 coins a day for free before asking you to sign up.

Quote: It's obvious which would be the most expensive. Agreed ... no doubt the Lafayette would cost the most for a complete grading set. That said ... I humbly disagree with commems informed reply ... first time ever I have done so. Quote: I vote that the Columbian set would be tougher to complete due to fewer coins being available in the marketplace. Consider if you will expanding your horizons to consider all market available coins ... in that respect I see at shows and on-line perhaps 20x raw circulated Columbian half versus raw circulated Lafayette. If a collector was willing to pay the grading fees ... than a focus on current slabbed examples does not matter. I believe with some dedication a 'grading set' of Columbian half would be both easier to acquire and less expensive than a similar Lafayette Dollar set. That's my opinion. David

@nickelsearcher: You came at this one from a different angle than I did. I considered only the relative number of coins that have already been graded. If the task at hand allows one to purchase raw coins and then have them submitted, I would absolutely agree with you that the 1893 Columbian set should be easier to assemble based on the sheer number of potential coins available.

I have a start on both sets but I think that my checkbook will dictate the Columbian. I honestly think that the Lafayette would be a much better looking set.

I'm guessing a grading set is PO1 to MS 70 (in theory). In classic commems I'm guessing MS68 would be top pop

This is a Lafayette grading set up date. I now have 4 additions. They are the F15, F12, VG10 & VG08. I need the G06 to finish the run to F15. I bought the F15 at a good price and then the next one became available and the next one and the next one. It's funny how things work out sometimes.

Tough set to pursue ... congratulations on your recent additions. Where do you intend to end the set ... MS66? David

I'm not planning on going above AU58. If anything I will work from the bottom up. If a graded VF20 or 25 shows up that looks nice I may try to add it. If it doesn't happen I'll be happy with a 15 or down. I've been very fortunate to acquire the last 4 already graded.

I now have the run of PO01 to F15 in the Lafayettes. I do have pics in the PCGS website under the Showcase coins. If someone could do a link for me it would be appreciated. I'm in the process of adding an XF45. If I go to AU58 I only need 9 more. :). That may or may not happen.

The XF45 has arrived and it's a good match for the set.

I've added a VF35, AU50 & AU55 to the set. That leaves 6 to go.
