The Roman emperor Vetranio (350 AD) issued only six AE types. I wrote a web site on them:

Comments, suggestions, and corrections are solicited.

Definitely a more difficult one emperor to obtain. Took me awhile to find mine.

Very nice and informative web page. I happen to own one each of the last two types, both of which I obtained from a dealer in Australia with who I have done quite some business. Many of the coins on your web page are indicated as rare. What do you regard as rare?

Vetranio is a pet peeve of mine. Many dealers use the name when selling coins of Constantius II that share the types used by Vetranio. A coin of Vetranio needs to read VETRANIO on the coin.

"Many of the coins on your web page are indicated as rare. What do you regard as rare?"

Well, "rare" is on a scale of availability and where one draws the line is debatable. This might make a good topic of discussion for the group. I happen to collect ancient-coin auction-sale catalogs and if a desirable and expensive type is not in the first hundred you look through the type is probably "scarce" or "rare". Common types might not well be in auctions because they do not meet the minimum value requirements. Common types are probably more common, relatively, than many people recognize because so many are sitting around, not listed for sale, because the market is already glutted.

Now, with so many resources on the web, one can search on "Vetranio" at acsearch or coinarchives and other sites and usually pull up a number of examples of even "rare" types. Also, a search of vcoins and MA-Shops may find a number of examples of a "rare" type, sometimes because the prices are just too high and the coins sit unsold for years. If you consider the group of collectors who might want a coin of a particular type and most of them have it, I would not call it "rare". On the other hand, consider a group of collectors with their collecting area including the type in question and consider among them those who have been collecting for years and could afford the coin type. If a substantial majority who want it did not have the type it might be considered rare.

In the case of Vetranio I think any emperor who ruled less than one year has a claim to "scarce" coins. Then, if some types are 1/20 as frequent as his commonest types, I might draw a line there and call them rare.

We've had this discussion before where RIC has listed a coin as rare, but, in fact, it either no longer is considered rare or it was never truly rare in the first place. I have a problem with seller's using the RIC rarity in order to sell. I must admit I annotate coins in my catalog with the RIC rarity, but this is for my own benefit. I suppose that is the reason I asked the question in the first place: What do you regard as rare? Your answer at least gives a reasoning other than quoting RIC.

So, if I understand correctly, the Vetranio coins listed as rare on your web page are 1/20 as frequent as his most common types?
