So I thought I would try and broaden my coin searching and try gumtree.com.au I have had two crap experiences so far. That's 100% crap My first try was someone selling bulk pennies, I email back and forth several times all were pleasant but very vague from seller, and they never communicated out of the gumtree email system which is fair enough but they never ended up sending pics, and couldn't figure out postage, so I gave up and left them. The second one today was a shocker! A person is selling an entire huge collection that was too good to be true, mint sets, proof sets, pre decimals and everything. Of course I asked what they had any threepences and if they had any of the six coins I was looking for, he said yes and I could have the 6 for $80 and I was excited, only to be emailed pictures all different off ebay, and one from a seller I know. Grrrrr I am so tempted to email back and say he has a nerve emailing me my own picture, that would be hilarious.

yeah lot of scammers on gumtree, you have to be careful. I tried buying some stuff, only to be given the run around and storys. Never again. No one patrols it and anyone can get multiple accounts and pretty much list anything. because of the structure of the site, they have limited funding for this security, hence giving scammers a good platform to take advantage of people..

I'm with banknotelover: I'd steer clear of Gumtree. I know someone who got scammed trying to buy a concert ticket.

I have only had one experience on gumtree (as a seller though), site worked well for me. I was just looking to sell some world coins I had won as part of an auction lot (I bought the auction lot for the Australian coins but some world coins were also included). I took the coins to the guys house and he paid in cash for the price we had agreed on, based on the pictures I had emailed him.

I stumbled over a scam on Craig's List: the seller was using pics from ebay, of a motorcycle that I had inspected 6 months earlier.. AC is frustrated, but as I read his post, he still has his money; no coins gained, but only a little time lost. For all its faults, ebay doesn't attract the criticisms that CL & GT do. I'm wondering what the cause of the difference is ? Maybe ... PayPal ?

Hey Peter, First I'm pretty sure AC is a very nice not a dude dude..sorry but the pink bows a bit of a give away and 2 I think it's that they are different sorts of sites, the others are more maybe a social site where as ebay is pretty much auction. And it might be that fee bay has been around for a long time and they appeared to care years ago but like most have lost the plot now. And the others have got a bad name 'cause of things like the craig list killer or something like that, sorry I've got a shocking memory I don't think it's paypal as I have bought a fair bit both local and off shore and the only time I've used paypal is for the OS stuff or if they're a bit suss and have lower than 100% feedback. So I think it's a trust thing and a better the you know type thing..but really your guess is as good as mine. Oh and word of mouth caries and I'm so grateful for it as it has saved me time money and stress so I don't have a problem talking about who's good and who to avoid and ebay hide their scammer better..or they hide them selves better as when I was getting cards I'd noticed that some dealers get a bad wrap really quick but something happens and then poof, they have 100% feedback again ready to rip the next one but I haven't been involed with the coin side long enough to see if it happens there as well
