i just read the post about the 1985 ten cent and was unaware it was on the hard to find list. I finally have five (or more) of every decimal coin so have stopped looking. I did read that the 1972 five cent was rare so I collected about twenty of them. Without going into a long debate about "rare" has anyone ever made a list of the hard to find decimals? Perhaps it would be wise for me to keep on the lookout for them.

Sorry. ? To clarify. I was not asking about faults and variations like bubbles, incused, rabbit ears and all that. I just meant low mint years.

The RAM website has mintage numbers.
http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/
Its just a matter of deciding what is low enough mintage for you to be interested.

Mintages aren't the be-all and end-all of rarity, however; there were some years and denominations where mintages were high but for one reason or another the coins were never released into circulation. There are several examples from the early to mid 1980s where this happened. And of course natural attrition through loss, damage and wear has meant that for some older years (decimals have been around for nearly 50 years now) even a "high" mintage in absolute terms can still mean a relatively now number of survivors in circulation.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Like the 1983 and 1984 20c. The age is also a valid point. I'm sure a decent percentage of 1972 5c have been removed due to damage/loss along the way.

thanks guys

Rariry is always based on perceived value from the buyer's eyes - though mintage does play a role ultimately the buyer themselves dictate rarity through how much they are willing to pay for an item. The 1972 5c + 1968 2c are by no means rare in terms of coins minted by mint but obviously at this point in time, prices paid for these coins suggests that they are.
Though the 1985 10c has a low mintage, this coin is not perceived to be rare by buyers hence resell value will not be high

Some slight variations/additions to Nancy's list:

$1 2003 4.1 (Volunteers)

$1 2008 9.3 (Scouting)

$2 2000 5.7 (rather than 1999)

If youre going to noodle any 1c and 2c I would also be on the look out for 1968.

I dont bother with the 1977 10c because a previous thread concluded the mintage on the RAM site must be incorrect. They are really easy to find in circulation and some old catalogues had a much higher mintage.

On second thoughts scrap the 2008 $1 - seems to have been more minted than on the list that I have(17.2m)

Yeah that's pretty close to my list nancyc. I use this site now for mintages as the figures should be close enough. When I first started I was collecting everything up to about 50 mill mintage but now I stick to less than 10 or there abouts.
