Abdu: Welcome to the CCF!

Placer gold is found natively in nugget form from stream beds, and is panned or sluiced the extract the gold from the gravel in which it is found. Almost all gold is found by hobbyists in this way, or in ground my metal detector.

I have found a few small gold nuggets in this way.

Reef gold is often found in quartz veins ir very hard igneous rock that has to be crushed in powerful crushing machines, before the heavier gold particles can be washed from the crushed material. A large amount of money is needed to set up plant to produce gold in this way.

The gold mine in Kalgoorlie in Western Australia has been in in operation for nearly 100 years now. Because of the huge size of the operation, payable gold is extracted at 2 to 3 grammes per tonne. Can't use acid on that! You would need lots of acid to extract almost no gold on a home basis.

I have visited this place as a tourist on midnight stopover on a train trip from Perth to Sydney.

Google 'Super Pit'. Lots of interesting things to look at on various websites using this search.

Most gold is refined by the cyanide process. This is strictly an industrial operation. Bit risky and definitely not profitable to use at home on a small scale.

Gold is also found in the mineral known as telluride, which is a sort of tellurium / gold double salt. That means that not all gold is found in native form.

Abdu
google Aqua regis, This will dissolve gold but it is expensive, hard to obtain and quite dangerous to use
Cyanide will do the same job but the ore has to be finely ground for this chemical to have good effect, This stuff will kill you as well.
If you want to keep your health ,then don't do your own refining

Aqua Regia or royal water will dissolve gold and virtually all other metals. It is a mixture of concentrated acids. Proportions vary but typically about 2/3 concentrated hydrochloric acid and 1/3 nitric acid. Both acids are relatively inexpensive industrial commodity products but likely cost much more in small quantities.

Also, once it has dissolved the gold, then what? Typically, it must be neutralized to precipitate the gold which is then filtered off, washed, and perhaps given other treatment as well.

Aqua Regia is VERY corrosive and dangerous. It also gives off toxic and corrosive fumes, so is not something that anyone without specific laboratory training and equipment should handle.

Safe disposal is also a primary consideration as you would not want to contaminate ground or ground water with this.
