Hi all, Since I have been gone from the boards I have been sitting on my started Barber dime collection and also have 3 slabbed Walkers in 64 that I was going to use to start a short set. Since I realize now I will never be able to afford to complete either set I am thinking about selling and starting new with another subject that's affordable. I hate to sell, as the dealers I have spoken to offer not much over type price for the Barbers. They then turn around and sell by date and mm. I don't really appreciate this practice but I know they are in business for the money so...... Just looking for opinions or comments on my dillema. Oh yeah thinking about starting to collect key's in types, Circ. Walkers, Morgans, Peace, and just what appeals to me, forget the set completion goals. Of Course keep on working on my Large Cents. Thanks and regards Tony

Hi Tony
Unless you really need the money from the other coins to start the new collection, Then why not sit on them ? they will not lose value in your possession and there is always the chance that you may be able to addto them at a later date.
If you do need the money then wait until you can sell them to a collector for somewhere nearer to market value,,there is no need to take a huge loss on them just to realise another direction.
you may offer them here and see what you get, we have three different venues that you can utilize ,sell out right,, sell by member auction, or trade for some of the coins your interested in .

Thanks, Yes I do agree. I think I'll just keep the year set of Barbers since I have all the P's but one. So, I'll have a nice year set. The slabs will go as they are up in price now. I had to laugh at your bio. Midlfe Crisis huh? yeah meee toooo. Regards Tony

Welcome to the Midlife Crisis Club. To me, the Barbers are definitely worth keeping; the Walkers would require a, "Are these pretty to me?" decision. If they pass the "pretty" test, they stay. You never know when opportunity will strike, allowing you to add to them as the years go by. On the other hand, Walkers are a value growth area, going forward, because of their beauty. I'm a card-carrying member of the "I Like It" school of collecting decisions.

If you take one Barber and One Walker then you have the start of beautiful type set If your remaining walkers are from the forties then you have a great start for a 1941 to 1947 short set p.s. don't sell the barbers!

Try not to overwhelm yourself. There is a lot to collect out there.

Thanks guys, Yes I am going to use the "Do I like it method now". Not trying to complete sets will let me just get what I like. If I do sell the Barbers, I will still have the year set so that's cool with me. The Walkers, yes I like them but the money can go to better use elsewhere.

Mid life crisis is a great excuse ,,just avoid the corvettes and blondes !!
Tony my collecting has changed drastically in the last couple of months and I'm in the process of going through my coins and using the do (I still love this coin) method of thinning and buying other coins,,so I can relate in great detail what your going through.
I happen to know that there is also one other un named Moderator who is also in the midst of great changes in what they collect !!
funny thing though ,,what He collected has suddenly become an interest to me !! I dont remember picking up any wrapped beans ?

Funny, ain't it? For me, it was more like running full speed and bouncing off an angled brick wall than making a gradual curve in my collecting desires. In two months, I will not own a single coin which was acquired for any reason other than I like how it looks.

Yes guys, This is why I am back into collecting now. Having lost interest in the Barber dimes and realizing I am never going to comlete the set. Also having money for the hobby helps too. I had too many hobbies and have narrowed it down to just 2 now, Coins and Oil Painting,, this should leave time and money for both. I prefer the word accumluator now instead of collector. If I like it I buy it, it doesn't have to fit into some Grand Plan. Tony

Hi. I agree with the others: collect it because you like it. I officially collect silver dollars and Walkers. So every coin I like that doesn't fall into either category, it goes in the Dansco 7070 type set album.

I've been collecting for years, and loving it. I don't think I've ever completed a set. So what?

Yes thats the way I feel now too many headaches trying to complete sets, and most of them can't be completed without a huge outlay of cash for some of the key dates so it defeats the prupose of even starting a set.

In the past I was trying to complete sets. I ended up losing interest in coins & for several years didn't do anything with the collection except let it gather dust. I have been more active since I decided to just collect what looked good to me.
