I see different information/pictures on different sites for what an 1839 Braided Hair cent should look like. There appear to be an 1839 Modified Matron Head as well as an 1839 Braided hair. The Red Book lists an 1839 Braided hair, while some sites seem to start the Braided hair at 1840. Is the 1839 Braided Hair an 1839 with the head of an 1840? The differences in the braid and hair curls under the neck appear to be an indicator. Did the Braided Hair actually start in 1839 or 1840? I hope this makes sense LOL!

according to the CCF coin facts, in 1839 both types were produced. And my Red Book shows 4 versions 1839 of Matron head, and 1 version 1839 Braided hair

The braided hair is the style from 39 1/2 to 57. Not sure why they call it that because I've never seen braids. The easiest way to tell is that the tip of the coronet is closer to the 5th star on the braided hair and closer to the 6th on the earlier modified matron. Those include a regular head like 1838, booby heads and silly heads.

Thanks folks - those answers helped a lot, and the information on the coronet relationship to the stars was a good one! I've been working on a first year of issue collection, and wanted to be sure I get the correct type of 1839.

There was also a significant head change in 1835.

Found this one too. From what I see another difference is in the hair curls under the bust for the true Braided Hair obverse.

Yes, also known as the 1839 Petite head. As mentioned the point of the coronet is further left and and the point of the bust is over the 8.
