I have 13 Kennedy halves. They are all from 68 and 67. I have 4 I want to keep as collectibles, 2 from each year. One from each year I want to keep is a nice lightly circulated, the other is a gold tarnish. One of the gold tarnishes is particularly beautiful.

As for the rest, the are more heavily circulated, all from the same years with less appeal.

AFter seeing ebay auctions for a few lots of kennedy 40%s sell for bellow melt, I was winding what you guy's opinion of selling coins to jewelers is? All the research I have found says that if kennedy 40%s are not in really good condition, they are basically worth their silver. Is this true?
The total melt for a ken40% is about $4, the ebay one's I have seen sell for $3.25ish.

It seems sad to melt coins, but I really need money for bills and stuff, and I would REALLY love to buy a metal detector in the next week or so if I can pull some money together. Not too much left of summer and I want to have a few decent days to hunt before school starts. I also have a surplus of proof ikes that I will try to sell on ebay. No melt value there since mine are sadly clad. But those have an extra premium from cameo, so hopefully those do better on the market.

Thanks for opinions, ALL opinions are welcome!

Yes and no. If you just wanted quick cash yes, if you really wanted top dollar selling to a collector or someone who likes to have silver would get you melt value where I'm not sure what the jeweler would pay.

But yea if theyre in bad shape melt is their only sellable value

The jeweller may take them and get melt value for them but he is not going to give you the full amount, he has rent and rates and insurance and staff to pay.

Better to take it where he would (if you lived in London I could give you the address but you don't)

He would take the metals to a bullion/scrap dealer who would probably give him 1 or 2% under the current metal price. Some of these places you would require a trade account but I know that some of them a member of the public can walk in and walk away with a cheque. Maybe someone on the forum knows of such a place in your area.

As was said previously you will get less than melt ($4) at the "jeweler's" so I would try this first. Since you have only 9 you want to sell (13 minus the 4 you want to keep) try putting them on ebay in groups of 3 at a starting price of $12 (for 3) with a reasonable amount ($1.50) for postage. If they sell fine...if not then off to the jeweler's

I checked the last few multi half sales and they were right around $4 each in various groups..

Short answer: no. I'm not going to get into it. Take them to a coin place.

Ok, I will try ebay. They aren't in horrid shape, so maybe they could sell ok. I have some other stuff going on ebay today so it should be fine.

EDIT

For ebaying these, is the same time frame good for coins as other items? Most items sell best between 6-8pm, monday-thursday

For ebay I like Sunday evening but remember it is summer and coins just do not do as well now.....I usually back off until at least mid September....but pure bullion sales might be exempt and do fine..

ebay usually is not good for coins going at melt. especially the 40% ones . a lot of times they go under melt. try to sell them for cash to a local collector.
