I was at the grocery store yesterday, stocking up for the game, and walked past a guy putting coins into a Coinstar machine. He had them in a plastic container and was dumping them into the machine and I noticed some large coins in the container. I stopped and asked if I could see what he had. It turned out that it was a mixture of coins and the large coins being Kennedy half's. Being that Coinstar takes a percentage for their services, I offered him face value for the "selected" Kennedy's. In toll I got 10 40% coins and 8 90% coins all in about VF condition.

Wonder if the store will let me camp out in front of that machine.

You can contact CoinStar or whomever uses that particular machine. Ask the store manager for their contact info and ask for all the half dollar or any other denomination. Most require that you buy all that comes in, but for halves this is usually a low number. The local store in Dover takes in about 100 dollars per month. While on rare occasions you will pull out the 40% silvers, most are just spenders. At face value though, the staff or I can make a few cents selling them to the casino. They use them for promotions and pay 55 cents each.
However, all collectors can use them to pass out as tips or gifts since the average person rarely sees them any more.

But why would the casinos pay a premuim for clad halves when they could just buy them for face from the bank?

Once or twice a year I go to Vegas. Until last year I used to stop by the cage every night on the wayto bed and get $500 in halve to sort through. After a four night stay I would ususally have a couple of rolls of 40% and a roll of 90% the Casinos never offered me a premium for returning the rest.
These days all the machines are ticket in and ticket out so finding Casinos that have Hlves is not easy.
Rest in Peace

Living in Las Vegas I find that more than true. The Banks want to charge the casinos more than 55 cents for the half dollars and refuse to order any, even in bags. They are afraid you will place them in circulation and they will have to deal with them.

Each year I buy a bag from the mint of the current year. The 2005's just arrived this morning. I keep a roll of each for myself and then offer the forum members a "P&D" at face value plus about 75 cents postage. Limited to one set per person. The ones not distributed are then placed in circulation.

I haven't made the offer yet on this forum but will if Susan & Bobby approve and I find out where to post it.

The main reason that some casino's pay a premium for Half Dollars is pretty simple. The Mint has not released any to the banks since 2001. Now that we are entering into 2005, they are getting harder and harder to find. 99% of the casinos now use tokens to make up for the real thing, but most still love the sound of a real coin hitting the tray. At Dover Downs, they use Halves and Ikes for promotions more than anything else. Since these coins do not leave the casino, they can pay whatever fits their budget for advertising. I have heard simular tails from other casino's around the nation.
