The monogram is the key.

(From catbikes.ch)

In the coin from Wildwinds you can vaguely see the S in the middle, like the monogram in the illustration.

.... but I cant get over the fact it looks like it was designed and struck by a 3 yr old...
In this case probably you'll dislike V century coins or byzantine coinage.
The low level of portraits and poor struck is a sign of the becoming dark ages after barbarian's invasion,in my opinion it's what I like most in late imperial coins.
Then every opinion must be respected, and I respect yours.:-)

Well said and I agree with you. These coins reflect a turning point in Europe's history IMO.

I find the decline of coinage fascinating don't get me wrong. It just amazes me that anatomical realism completely disappeared and did not reappear until the Euro Ren Period. If its any consul I have always wanted a coin of Odacer a Theodoric would be cool too. :-). I surly hope I didn't step on any toes with the 3 yr old comment. This coin has got to be the most valuable coin in the world if its worth 7500 is horrid condition. BTW what does the "Symbol and or monogram" mean. Is it the mint or the person who made the coins?

All our toes are fine. No hard feelings

As to your question, a monogram is a combination of letters to make a symbol or design. In the case of Roman, Byzantine, and Germanic coins it was the combination of the letters in the ruler's name, since bronze AE4s were usually too small to have the name of the ruler completely on the obverse. Basically it was a way to let people know who was on the coin.

Great coin echizento! I checked on Helveticas and saw that a couple of Valentinian III coins shared the same reverse and left field letter as Johannes RIC 1910. I don't doubt you but, out of curiosity, how were you able to tell it was Johannes without an obverse legend? Only way I can think of is that Johannes had a bit of a beard but I can't see one in the photo of the obverse.

My first impression was that it was Valentinian also, but after showing the coin to some other collectors they all agreed that it was more likely Johannes. The only way that I'm going to know for sure is to send it out to David Sear, I'll get around to doing that one day. Until than it's labeled as Johannes ? on the 2X2.

I could get another opinion for you, that from one of my trusted dealers that is very knowlegeable about late AE4's, if you'd like. Won't substitute what David Sear would say about your coin, but another opinion wouldn't hurt.
