As you may know already I am really fond of the AE4s of the mid-late 5th century emperors (Leo, Zeno, Val III, etc.), though I can only go for the cheap emperors at the moment. So I really wish I could buy this Julius Nepos (It is on sale for 7 and a half grand! ). Pretty nice for an AE4 of this era, no? I like how the A in "AVG" was designed. It is 12 mm wide. That's a really nice Julius Nepos coin. They are also very rare, hence the high price tag of the coin.

You see, it'd see this and go 'thats worthless! Not even good condition.' Id probably use it as a piece to experiment with cleaning methods on. 7.5K?! Id never have guessed.

Maybe its a typo.. $7.50 ? For 7500 you could have the finest condition Greek Gold coins. I don't know a lot beyond the late 5th Century but yikes.

I assume theres something super special about it. Maybe its the only coin of that emperor?! I can think of no other reason for such a hefty price tag. Unless someones playing a fun game of sheets and giggles.

Coins of Julius Nepos are extremely rare, as in you'll be lucky tofind one in any condition rare. Coins of the last few Western Roman emperors are very scarce to nearly imposible to find.

But how few must there be to justify 7500? I mean, whatever someone is willing to pay is what its worth, but there can only be, what, less than 100?

Plus the details and condition of this particular coin are way better than what you usually find on 5th century AE4s (the little bronzes from this era suffer from poor craftsmanship and most are found in bad to terrible shape)

Very rare indeed, one of the reasons I like buying uncleaned lots is that the small AE4's tend to be overlooked by pickers and their is a chance slim as it is to come across a gem like this. I came across my Johannes that way.

this I s really a great coin and I must say the price is quite right for a similar one. I remember an half siliqua of nepos from ravenna mint sold recentely for €14.000in my country at an auction. We must consider that although he was successor to Romulus Augustus, was the last legitimate emperor of the West, de jure, has held the title until his death. So nepos is the real LAST west roman emperor. How much will you pay to have the last one in your collection?:-)

I agree the coin has significant numis value but I cant get over the fact it looks like it was designed and struck by a 3 yr old.

Here is another Julius Nepos from Wildwinds.com. Coins in this condition are what you'll get, or worse. Not sure how this coin was ID'd to this emperor. A lot of them are like that during this era, or worse to the point of no ID. So, the OP coin is really nice compared to others.
