Hey everyone! On the subject of a mythology smackdown, I gave it some thought overnight, and presently I think the subject is too broad--and we're likely to see a lot of coins played before. So I'm opening up the Smackdowns for another collector. In the meantime I'll give this some more thought. Have fun!

It's up to you. Although you could make a rule that any coin that was in the top three positions in previous SMACKDOWNs cannot enter that particular coin.

Gil: I think DVC has passed the baton on to anyone else who might care to moderate the next Smackdown. I would like to see someone other than Steve, you or me run the next one, so I'm waiting to see if someone volunteers. If not, you or I can run it.

I realize he is passing it on for now. Although, he said he was going to give it some thought. So, why not give him another idea?

JWH--yep, for now. I think variety is what will keep smackdowns interesting--and picking the right categories is crucial. My experience is limited to mostly Greek, but I suspect there's a lot more to do with Roman coins that I have no clue about. --"I'll be back"

There are a whole host of subject we can get into that open things up to all entrants.
Engraving errors. Minting errors. Nicest patina. Pick a mint and restrict it to imperials. Pick a city and restrict it to Provincials. Animals. Things that swim (or could in theory, which opens things up to mythological water beasts). Narrow things down to City Commemoratives of CTG. Pick some popular legends and let's see how they vary from type to type and mint to mint. FEL TEMPS... GLORIA ROMANORVM....
ans so on....
Just some random thoughts.....

Maybe one of us Newbies should run it - that way it would ensure that a wider range of people would own the coins, as we'd obviously choose something we could enter ourselves.
Oh, and we'd also spell our topic titles right...

Ideas that I was able to come up with:
London mint coins Siliquae Greek/Roman rulers born in a certain month (particularly the current one, July, or August, since it is right around the corner) Failed usurpers Gallic coins Best-looking coins that once had BD Smallest bronze coins (someone mentioned that earlier) Coins with Christian symbols Coins with monograms
If I think of more I'll post them as well.

Fine by me. Have a go at it. I think possibly we're making too big of a deal about this. It certainly shouldn't be burdensome and it should be fun. Pick a topic, give the perimeters, and run with it.

Yeah--I don't want to 'over-proccess' this topic--I just wanted to avoid too much overlap. I think the Roman collectors have better insights--because there's much more variety there.

OK feel free to make suggestions and or comments on this topic before it goes goes to SMACKDOWN VII...
The Smallest Bronze / Brass / Billon Denomination. 1) Only one (1) coin per Member. (make it count, the coin will stand on its own) 2) Coin Parameters :Coin can have any device from any Region of the ancient world. The coin can be from any Era, Dawn of Bronze (BC 500ish) coinage to Byzantine collapse, AD 1476. Coin has to be attributable / or at least partially and the coin must be whole. You must have weight or maximum diameter or both, which is preferred. The coin must be an authentic relic. Barbarian types, ancient counterfeits are fine and encouraged. The coin cannot have competed in a prior Smackdown, unless its your smallest denomination or coin size. 3) Voting: Each member will compete with there bronze coin in all three tiers. Each member will submit 3 votes. The one with the higest sum will win. Tier 1)= Gold = 4 pts, Tier 2)= Silver = 2 pts, Tier 3) = Bronze = 1 pt. 4) Judgement: As many are not lavish collectors with huge budgets and a vast numismatic network of dealers, many people have crude or "inexpensive" types. I urge you all when judging take this into consideration. Please don't judge soley on immediate eye appeal, but obviously submit your best piece, thats why we are here. :-). Remember here we are going to be dealing with the smallest of all ancient bronze relics. The main judging factor here is size!
