I finally got this back from PCGS.

I mentioned the concerns of the previous post (Which is the real 1921 Peace dollar?) about the reeding. But it didn't seem to matter.

Not that it matters much, I think the grade is a little low.

Thanks for your participation.

Hope this answers the question.

The real 1921 Peace dollar is coin B.

Congrats!! Did they say anything about the reed count being off?

I agree with the grade- think it is dead on- the coin is too dark to get an AU. Also, not enough hair detail to go higher and the splotch on the obverse also would hold it back slightly. Surprised it didn't get a "genuine" due to the unusual darkness.

The original post on this topic for those interested is here: https://goccf.com/t/120434

In that original post there was quite a mixture of opinions, even from experts. The Coin A, in the original thread, which was a fake, was an outstanding fake- if you didn't have a magnet or balance it would fool you.

B is what I guessed in the comparision. A just looked too weak and mushy to be a real coin.

B is what I guessed as well, the lack of detail in the hair gave it away for me. It was subtle but got it right.

Nice!

Of course now I'm tempted to seek out other examples and compare reeding. I feel that such a quirk is extremely important to be sure of for identification, and if that reeding is normal it needs to be published somewhere.

Many well circulated Morgan dollars look like this and it is not uncommon for circulated Peace dollars to have this color.

The 1921-P is not uncommon with infrequent reeding.

So I JUST found the first thread and posted my method (essentially, playing Magic Eye with a 1922 and the pictures) and thoughts, and came up with B. Earle also did an overlay that confirmed my Magic Eye game worked, spotting inconsistencies on Coin A (we were looking at different things, but if he came up with letters and numbers in the wrong places then I'm sticking to my guns about the nose and chin being wrong).

Fantastic thread, Larry, and glad you got such a lovely Peace out of it! Thanks for the exercise (and entertainment; mystery novels are a huge weakness of mine)!
