As the month is almost done, I don't anticipate getting any more coins from the bank to noodle -so here is what I found for the month.
Most were from coin bags from the coin machines (in the CBA) $200 worth in a 50c bag; $100 in a 20c bag. Others were in Chubbs or $10 and $4 bags by the bank branch from banks without a coin machine.
These are not infallible...I had one lot of 50s that was 6 coins over, and had a stray 20c and 5c as well. Then again, I was 8 short in a lot of counted baggies, and another coin short in another coin machine lot. Also, the Kiwi 20 cent coins get through the coin machine..
As well as the short coins, I had a NZ 50c and a Fijian 50c as strays - both in Chubb rolls.
Best catch was an Incused Millenium, and also found a 1980 coin with a faulty/split planchet- sounds like it is made of lead!!
There was another $200 bag that I couldn't add to the results, as I'm sure someone dumped a collection of commem 50s into the machine that day: 38 Weary's plus a heap of WW2 2005's, and 3 x 1991 RAMS, plus a stack of States would have distorted the results...though I took the RAMS, thank you very much

Wow PD!
You are really getting through those coins!
I might do some analysis of production numbers vs what you are finding.
If you are interested I will post the results here.
Well done with the incused flag.

Great effort penny dreadful

An intelligent statistical analysis of the 50 cent coins.
So for you it looks like a 1 in 5495 chance of gaining a Millennium 50 cent incused.
I have 2 of these coins, after having noodled through about 7700 50 cent coins.
That means that you may be close to finding your second incused also, that is if you look through another 2205 50 cent coins

You bet

If I can find a nice one, that is - and at a reasonable cost!!

That's why I'm hitting the 50s fairly hard, trying to get one out of circ. before wear and tear take their toll

Here's the 20 cent results.

5750 coins in theory, but 4 coins short in one lot, and one up in another, so a nett of 5747 coins.

Of these, 27 are foreign: 1 x 1960 British florin, and 26 x Kiwi 20 cents; one was the Maori design of 1990. That makes 0.47% of the overall total as foreigners

So a total of 5720 Aussie 20s

PLATY's

COMMEMS

TOTAL = 376 (6.57%)

The 2004 pointy A's tend to have weak rims, so they are a bit more worn than they should be..

Very few 2001 states series are showing up - for example I'm yet to find a Queensland in the 20c coins, and the 2011 Volunteer is scarce here in Melbourne at least.

I think British large 10 pence and old florins are almost equal weight and diameter with the Australian 20c. I was wondering sometime ago, if they're circulation over there, and your post has answered my question. :)

OK.
I have done some analysis of 50c coins from 1969-2009 (because I only have mintage figures till 2009).
I have compared the number of coins made for each year to the total number made from 69-09 to get a percentage of "what was made".
Then I did a similar comparison for what PD found while searching.
I think the figures really tell us what is popular with collectors. The bigger the difference between what was made, and what was found shows just how much collectors have taken each coin out of circulation.
I think that the sample size might not be big enough to draw very accurate conclusions (eg if 0, or 2 1985 coins were found it would affect the figures a bit), but probably still show general trends.
If you copy the following data into notepad.
Save as "file.csv"
Then it should open in your favourite spreadsheet program.
Let me know if there are any questions or comments.
PS. I hope at least goatieman likes the stats!

Penny dreadful, wow! Excellent dedication to record keeping. This info is very useful, so cudos and thanks.

Enworb, I thought I knew a few things re computer tips, but didn't know about saving data as a csv file to make it convert to a readable Excel file. Many thanks for that tip and for the number crunching.

Thanks for putting up the stats ozcoins , they are pretty illuminating.
Yep, the expected vs. actual for the commems really shows up a disparity; back of the envelope calculating from your percentages gives 42.21% actual mintage for commems as a percent of total, yet of what I found in circulation there's only 32.62% of commem 50's. Shows pretty clearly that quite a few commems are squirrelled away.

I usually get about 2/3rds COA's and 1/3 of commems typically in a lot when getting a stack of 50 cent coins from the bank.

Another thing you've shown is the scarcity of the 1985 COA; according to published mintage of 1 Million, there should be as many found as 1993 - also 1M, but I know the 1985 is much harder to locate than the '93.
Do other noodlers get similar figures ?

Da daaa....found one yesterday, so yes I was due
Only took another 800 coins, of which 23 were Millenniums, and just the one was an Incused....

PD,
You did the real work by collecting the data. Thanks for sharing your results.
I get similar results that the 85 is much harder to find than the 93.
A similar sort of analysis of results for the 77 10c I did a little while ago uncovered that the publihed figure of 10.9 million on the RAM site and in some books is wrong and they are actually more common. This was backed up by discovery that a higher number was published in some older books.
I think if we do some similar analysis for a denomination that is less collected (eg 5c or 10c) we might come up with some a good estimate of natural attrition of coins (rather than how quickly collectors remove them from circulation).

Yeah, I've noticed that too.
I think someone else recently said that they find around eight 1993 for every one 1985, or something like that.
